Title: To Be King
Rating: G
Pairings: One-sided Arthur/Merlin
Warnings: None
Disclaimer: I do not own Merlin - sadly all characters belong to Shine and the BBC. I am just borrowing them
Prompt: The Master-Servant divide, although I kinda turned it into the King-subject divide

As Merlin pulled Arthur’s coronation robe straight, Arthur muttered,

“I’m going to miss this,”

“I’m not!” Merlin replied, trying for a smile but not sure that he succeeded. “You can have a new servant to shout at and call ‘idiot’ fifty times a day.”

He hoped Arthur would return the joking comment with one of his own, anything to lighten the mood, take his mind off the fact that he would no longer be the one who got to touch Arthur, who got to dress him and bathe him and just be near him. But Arthur’s expression remained just as serious, almost forlorn.

“There might have been times when you weren’t perhaps the most efficient of servants…” the soon-to-be king allowed himself a slight smile at that, “But you were always there for me when it mattered most.”

“And I always will be, sire,” Merlin reassured him, hoping that Arthur knew even with his new position of King’s Sorcerer he would still do what Arthur wanted (well… so long as it was in Arthur’s best interest!)

“Everybody does what exactly what I say. And now I’m King who will dare deny me? You and… you are the only ones who have ever stood up to me and told me I was wrong.” Suddenly Arthur was grasping Merlin’s arm and looking at him with an expression of such fierce intensity it took Merlin’s breath away. “Promise me you won’t stop. Promise me that you will not follow blindly.”

Merlin didn’t know quite how to reply. He thought about asking if that meant he had permission to carry on calling his King a prat… but he decided that Arthur was looking for something more… more… substantial.

He pulled back, out of Arthur’s grip. Looking directly into his future King’s eyes he said, “Arthur. You will be a great king. And I will be by your side for every step. I will not let you stumble.”

And finally the worry and stress in the blonde man’s face eased. He nodded.

“Thank you.”
