Prompt: Knights not kittens...
The first time it happened Arthur didn’t really notice it. It had been a long and hard training session, not helped by the bitterly cold wind that howled over the practice yard, and Arthur was busy making mental notes of which knights had shown what weaknesses today, planning what exercises they would each be doing the next day, so he hadn’t really taken much notice of Merlin walking from knight to knight, chatting and smiling with them.
The next time it happened was the following day, after another freezing cold training session that had Arthur getting involved more actively in the training purely to get his blood flowing to his fingers and toes once more. At the end, while Arthur was chatting to Sir Edward he saw out of the corner of his eye Merlin walking down from the castle to the yard, carrying a tray loaded with steaming flagons. He half watched, whilst recommending to Sir Edward that lowering his stance would reduce the number of blows that got past his sword, as Merlin moved to each knight in turn, offering them a flagon which they all took, smiling and nodding their thanks.
“Sire?”
Arthur realised he hadn’t been listening.
“Urm… yes…, protecting your head…” Arthur started, casting his mind back over what they had been talking about and getting back into the conversation.
And so it wasn’t until later he realised that he hadn’t been given one of those flagons. He wasn’t upset and jealous that Merlin had left him out… not at all. Just curious.
And so after the training session the next day Arthur was watching and waiting. Merlin appeared, right on cue, once more carrying a tray of flagons, steam rising from them and curling in the air. Arthur pretended to be checking his sword over while actually watching Merlin go around handing out flagons to all of the knights. He was walking over to Sir Gawain, about to hand over the last flagon when Arthur decided he’d had enough. His manservant was not supposed to be serving the knights all the while ignoring his master!
Arthur strode across the yard to Merlin and yanked the last flagon off his tray.
“Arthur!” Merlin started, looking a little guilty, (as well he might, ignoring Arthur like that!)
Glaring at him Arthur took a swig from the flagon. He spat the liquid out almost as soon as it touched his mouth.
“Blergh! Merlin what is this?!” He looked down at the flagon, screwing up his face in disgust. “You can’t serve this!”
“But they like it!” Merlin protested. “And it’s really cold out here!”
“Seriously Merlin, they're knights not kittens...” Arthur’s outraged outburst was rudely interrupted by Sir Gawain coming over.
“Sire? If you do not want my hot milk, please can I have it?”
Arthur thrust the flagon at him, scowling at the innocent expression on Gawain’s face and the smirk across Merlin’s. Really! Sometimes he thought Merlin had more influence over the knights than he did!
