Professor Xavier’s class entered with the same glee and excitement as they always did. A few sat at the normal classroom tables and chairs set out while other’s reclined comfortably on mismatched bean bags or large cushions. Merlin settled by Morgana on a squishy purple cushion pressed against the skirting so they could lean back on the wall. Morgana smiled warmly and he returned it with his own lopsided grin. The door opened as Morgana started to chatter to him but the words washed over him at the sight of your everyday blonde-haired, blue-eyed, tie-his-shoe-laces-with-magic-just-so-he-might-fall-on-you, action hero.

A sharp prod in the ribs broke Merlin from his hyphenated thoughts. An irritated Morgana sat glaring expectantly at Merlin, her lips quirked in the corner. She knew.

“That obvious?” Merlin mumbled as his face slowly stained rosy pink.

“No, much more obvious.” Caught out now Merlin decided to just watch this new blonde dream, wondered what his ability might be. Perhaps the ability to melt the minds of magical gay teens? Or maybe he had the ability to French-kiss a man to death. Whatever it was Merlin was eager to find out.

“Morgana…”

“Merlin…”

“Mature.”

“I thought so.” A cushion to face quickly wiped away Morgana’s smug smile, and half her lip gloss.

Merlin fiddled unsurely with the hem of his sleeves for a moment. Morgana might know full well that he thought this new boy was cute but would she think him mad if he told her how strongly the new boy pulled on his magic? Would she think him utterly insane for this sudden urge to quick march to the blonde and bow subservience to him but not without a cheeky grin.

“You do remember why I’m at this school, don’t you Merlin?” Ah. Yes. Telepathy. How Merlin despised telepathy. That thought earned him a reproachful glare and Merlin smiled sheepishly before turning puppy dog eyes on his defenceless friend.

“Sorry Merlin, I wish I could help, really! You know I can’t just go prodding around people’s thoughts.” Merlin sighed and slumped a little on his purple pillow. Of course Morgana was right, she was always bloody right. But his eyes refused to be drawn away from the sight of the blonde and a new seed of hope firmly planted itself in a fold of his brain.

“But… do you just know anything about him? Not from his brain just… maybe you know his name or something?”

Morgana looked at him oddly now, her brows twitched together and a glimmer appeared in her eyes. The glimmer she only got when she was about to prove Merlin to be the dunce his father had always insisted he was - although much more kindly of course.

“Merlin dear, your hunky little dream boat over there,” Merlin shot her a glare and a well time raspberry, “is none other than Arthur Pendragon.”

No.

No no no no no!

He couldn’t be Arthur Pendragon, he simply couldn’t! If nothing else Arthur Pendragon was one hundred percent pure bred human, not a drop of magic or mutant marring his blood. Why would Arthur Pendragon be here?!

“But… Morgana. That doesn’t make sense! Arthur Pendragon doesn’t have any abilities.”

“You’re absolutely right Merlin; he’s not here to be taught. He’s just here to learn.”

Merlin stared blankly, Morgana seemed to have been spending too much time with her new boyfriend Draig, she was getting too cryptic for comfort. Morgana rolled her eyes fondly.

“Merlin you should really watch the news once in a while. Arthur ran away from home two weeks ago, said he didn’t want to be near his father with his new suggestion to hunt mutants. He came here to learn more about us.” Merlin was speechless. Arthur sodding Pendragon, son of Uther Pendragon know hater of all things abnormal, the man who wanted to eradicate the world of ‘tainted blood’ was here in their midst just to get to know them?

Any more questions were cut off as Professor Xavier entered the room with his serene smile in place. His gaze lingered on Arthur for a moment before flickering briefly to Morgana for just a moment - the briefest of mischievous smiles passing between them - when finally his gaze settled on Merlin.

Uh-oh.

“Merlin, my dear lad, would you be kind enough to give our newest guest a little demonstration?” Merlin sat frozen for a second before Morgana piped up for him, saying he’d be glad to help, and shoved him forward without mercy.

“Urh… professor I… I don’t really know what-”

“Oh come now, you’re my star pupil Merlin. I know you can think of something.”

Merlin didn’t reply because Arthur already had. A snort of restrained laughter and a muttered “teacher’s pet”. And Merlin had his idea. He arched a brow at Arthur and stared unflinchingly into that confident blue gaze. Merlin let a self-assured smile slide onto his lips.

“Oh don’t scoff-”

Merlin set off a bout of over-dramatics, puffs of yellow smoke and green bubbles exploded around him as his body shrunk and twisted and morphed until his transformation completed. Much shorter now Merlin trotted over - wobbling only slightly - to Arthur’s desk and leapt lightly onto the surface, landing sans elegance on his tailed bum.

Arthur stared at the floppy eared jet black puppy in front of him, and his eyes crossed at the nose when Merlin licked the tip of his nose. Without the dramatics Merlin morphed back to human, sitting cross legged upon Arthur’s desk with only a trace of pink high on his cheeks.

“-I think I’d make quite the adorable puppy.”

The class sniggered and cheered, a few smatterings of applause broke out to which Merlin bowed playfully. He returned to his feathered seat leaving a wide-eyed and wet-nosed Arthur shocked in his chair.
