"Dance my pretties dance!"

"Merlin, that's disgusting"

Merlin shrugged.

Arthur grimaced.

"Oh Goldilocks it's funny! C'mon, you were only going to string them up over the battlements anyway!"

"That's traditional, this is macabre! ... Don't do doe-eyes at me Merlin"

"Dance with Horatio, and ... I'll dance with you later"

"You'll 'dance' with me later anyway Emrys"

"But I'll do the thing you like, with my magic" Merlin purred.

"No."

Merlin smiled into his eyes and Arthur felt a honey warmth ascend tingling up his spine that made him squirm ...

"Oh alright! But you're a sick fuck" he pointed two fingers firmly at Merlin.

Merlin giggled darkly.

~

"Shouldn't he be much heavier than this?"

"Magic strings, a corpse on normal strings would be too heavy Arthur!"

"Silly me"

Arthur rolled his eyes.

"Make him dance then, Horatio's getting lonely"

~

"What in the god's names do you call that move?"

Merlin spat out a laugh and raised a bemused eyebrow.

"I call it 'why is my boyfriend a disgusting wizard who makes me play with meat puppets'"

"Mm, very avant-garde. And the part where his foot fell off, does that have a name?"

"Yes. His ankle"

"Moody"

A moment passed in which Arthur pouted and peered down into the life-sized puppet theatre he had had built and gifted to Merlin for his last birthday, as was his request. He furrowed his brow. He was now regretting his choice. He should have bought him that hat instead.

"Horatio is sorry, Horatio begs another turn with his Prince"

"You're not helping yourself M- get Horatio's face off Yorick's crotch!"

"Alas, poor Yorick!"

~

Merlin crawled half-way up the bed and planted a kiss just above Arthur's bellybutton. Arthur remained silent behind his book. Merlin pushed Arthur's tunic up gently and began to kiss slowly downwards. Arthur's fingers clenched the pages.

"NO Merlin"

Unperturbed, Merlin grabbed the book and threw it on the floor.

"Somehow Merlin, I am not really in the mood"

"But you love theatre and dance shows!"

He continued his descent.

"Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the performers to be alive"

Merlin stopped and looked up, appearing genuinely regretful now. Wether this was because he really was sad at upsetting Arthur or because he wasn't going to get any was debatable, but Arthur softened - much to his own annoyance - and sighed ...

"I've called it 'The Shuff'"

Merlin frowned.

"The move where his foot fell off"

"The Shuff?"

"Well with only one foot it's not quite a shuffle"

Merlin snorted and they both broke down into fits of giggles.

~

"Arth- ... urrr"

"Can't dance?"

"I take it- I take- uhh"

"You sure do"

"Deep- Deep- ... errohh!"

"Gods, Merlin"

"I take it back"

"Now, magic- thing- Merlin now- ! .. uuuhhh"

~

"That is NOT what I did"

Arthur was laughing as Merlin cast shadows across the wall with his magic, a recreation of the afternoon’s performance.

"Yorick was far more suave than that, Horatio loved his shimmy"

Merlin smiled and with a flick of his wrist the shapes changed from thankfully-wooden-looking puppets to the two of them during the evening performance.

"Horatio did love his ... shimmy"

Arthur gasped in horror.

Merlin shifted his head and looked at him expressionlessly from his vantage point on the next pillow.

Arthur's lips twisted into a mischevious grin and his eyes fell from the wall to Merlin's.

"Could you do that next time, while we're-"

"Well yes; but wouldn't a mirror be better?"

"No, I want to see what you're seeing, in your mind ..."

Merlin smiled slowly. He'd find Arthur’s shadows yet.

writing what's that, you should be dancing yeah!, meat puppetry is family fun, horatio/yorick, crack crack crackity jones
