Poptimal: Merlin Review: A Bittersweet Premiere
Despite all the big changes that have taken place in Camelot, the heart and soul of the show, Merlin and Arthur’s friendship, has remained largely unchanged. The writers continue to balance the drama, action and adventure perfectly with some humor and lighthearted moments. The writers also gave us a chance in the premiere to see how Guinevere has become a strong and just Queen and an important member of the Round Table. She’s the perfect compliment to King Arthur.

"Arthur's Bane," the Merlin two-part season 5 premiere (Jan. 4, 2013 on Syfy), exists even more than previous season premieres not merely to kick off the latest run of Arthurian hijinks with a bang and a flash, but to accomplish the more important task of setting the stage for a story to be told in 13 parts that will seek to bring home a lot of what this series has been about. 5.01 image gallery can be viewed here.

Overall this is a pretty serious episode, but the one moment of levity made me laugh out loud- Merlin in Queen Annis’ court using magic in order to have the ability to juggle and perform sleight of hand, utterly baffling Arthur at these suddenly displayed abilities.'Arthur
