Sunrayravine recounted her experience of Adetomiwa's play 'Money in the Vault'.
Adetomiwa Edun in Money in the Vault
Yesterday I went to the Old Vic Tunnels to see Adetomiwa Edun on the stage.
Money in the Vault consisted of four short plays exploring our past, present and future relationship with money. Adetomiwa was in the second play, ‘Often, Mud Sits Upon The Throne’, which was written by Brad Birch. It’s a monologue and he was on the stage by himself for 15 minutes.
The play opens with a man walking on stage carrying a cardboard box. He’s wearing a light blue shirt with the top button undone, and shiny grey suit trousers. Although it’s never explicitly stated, it becomes clear that it’s 2008 and he’s just lost his job in the financial industry.
Adetomiwa is asked to display a range of emotions - from aggression to panic to resignation. A lot of his aggression is directed at the audience - at one point he exclaims “how am I to blame for your situation?”. His performance was confident and compelling - I was riveted to my seat for the whole 15 minutes (and the woman in front of me stopped playing with her phone).
