They didn't chop her hair, this is just the hairstyle (very 30s) she's supposed to have in this show.

She's plays the lead singer of a 30s jazz band that's becoming more popular in London during the time, but gets killed and the everyone in and around the band is suspected.

I know! All the "Merlin" cast keeps saying that she has a lovely singing voice (I think Rupert Young especially keeps mentioning it, bless).
