Prompt: Merlin is a young, up and coming author, whose first novel seemed a fluke of a hit, one of those books that some publishing house took a gamble on that paid off one-hundred fold, and each consecutive novel has garnered the same enthusiasm from his loyal readers. The subject of his novels? Well, seeing as due to his own given name Merlin was enraptured
by everything and anything Arthurian legend while growing up, basically living and breathing it and annoying anyone who would listen, so of course his novels are based on Arthur and Merlin, but not in the way one would think it. Instead of rewriting history, Merlin is writing the future, or what one could imagine the reincarnated lives of these two important, influential and overly documented persons could be in the present. Merlin's pseudo name is up to the author, because who would ever take seriously an author by the name of Merlin writing about Arthur and Merlin.

Of course, no matter an author's talent, all good writing streaks have the tendency of hitting a stubborn, unforeseen writer's block now and again, and this one is more than a bit frustrating, leaving Merlin feeling at his wit's end, and a little bit sleep deprived with worry that he's leaving his characters at a cliff, hanging in limbo, but then, unbeknownst to Merlin, salvation is just around the corner by way of a chance encounter.

Late one night, while wandering the city streets (author's choice on where exactly that is) trying anything to get his creative juices flowing, Merlin finds himself pulled into a dark alley by a nefarious lot attempting to mug him. Unfortunately Merlin, being a more simple man in life even though he is rather well off so to speak, isn't carrying much of anything of value on his person, and in the midst of receiving a beating for his pauper pockets, a knight in shining armor comes to his rescue, delivering a thumping like
no other and chasing off the thugs. His knight is blond, and more than handsome, and coincidentally answers to the name Arthur, and in a flash of a single breath, Merlin finds his muse, and perhaps possibly a little bit more than writing fodder.

Prompt: Old Man Emrys has been living in a ramshackle of a cottage in/near the marshlands in Glastonbury for what seems like eternity to the locals. His white hair is as long as his beard, and he's rumored to be a bit on the touched side of sanity (or insanity). He keeps to himself for the most part, aside from the straggler adolescents who like to seek out the old man, believing him to me to be the infamous Merlin of legend or attempting to prove all such rumors as fanciful nonsense or simply being unruly, annoying, snot-nosed brats looking for some fun at the expense of an elderly man. In any case, Old Man Emrys usually trades
heated, sharp barbs with the devils and chases them off his property (which seems to be as far as his eyes can see), sealing the belief that he is in fact crazy and one should steer clear of the old coot for their own good.

The truth is, Old Man Emrys is in fact the Merlin of Arthurian legend, not the legend that one reads in books, and sees splashed across theatre screens, but MERLIN, and in the days, weeks, months, years and centuries since sending his King off to the Isle of Avalon, and ages later after turning his ever youthful self into that visage of his elder self during a particularly hard period of time, Merlin simply never had the desire to change himself back. He eventually settled in the cottage in Glastonbury and began leading a solitary life of forgetting.

Another day, another trespasser meanders onto his property, and Old Man Emrys is belittling the kid long before he even gets a good look at him, but when he does finally make eye contact he discovers it isn't some pimply, snot-nose teenaged hoodlum but a man, a rather striking man with blond hair, and square jaw, eyes as blue as the sky and a look of sheer surprise (and something else that makes him feel uncomfortable) on his face that deflates the tirade he was barley halfway through, that is until the man tells him his name is Arthur and it just sets the old man off on his tirade again about people not minding their own business, and ha-ha, I haven't heard that one before, and you'd think someone your age would be above the pranks of an adolescent…

The truth is, this is Arthur, the Once and Future King, Merlin's King, and while Arthur remembers everything, nothing is
clicking with Merlin (perhaps it's just been so long or he's just in denial or gave up all hope long ago), and it's up to Arthur to befriend the old man, and help Old Man Emrys remember Merlin and his magic, because this is the time that was foretold for them, this is the deities returning the Once and Future King to the world, not because the Albion they knew before needs him again, but because for once in existence, the deities realize/admit that Arthur is needed again, by Merlin, and that they owe Emrys far more than they have ever repaid him for.

Prompt: Arthur embarks on a trip to (insert kingdom) to work on some peace accord, and Merlin goes with him, because he's Arthur's servant after all, nevermind that Arthur probably will get offered service in said kingdom. When they arrive, Arthur observes that in X kingdom is a normal thing for a servant to warm his king's bed at night, or even if a nobleman or a knight is married, extra relations with servants are approved and encouraged; pleasure and duty are two separated things you don't have to deprive yourself of. Arthur feels uncomfortable when he's given a room with only one bed and when he realises he's expected of him to bed his manservant every night like it's tradition to do there. He starts to look at Merlin with different eyes in the week he passes there, observing how natural these relationships are in this kingdom, watching Merlin act more carefree than he does in Camelot, responding to the flirting of a knight or another, seeing him waking up every morning by his side and having breakfast with him, etc. . . It turns out, by the time Arthur's due to go back to Camelot, he's not sure what he wants anymore.

Prompt: Arthur and Merlin were friends in their youth, their own version of "the odd couple" even their mutual acquaintances can't accurately explain how they became best friends. As with any friendship, life gets in the way, pulling them in opposite directions. They still consider each other best friends, and keep in contact, continuing to know each other better than anyone else, but they are no longer living in each other's back pocket. Merlin is still the person Arthur goes to when he doubts himself, or needs someone to listen to him vent about his father, and he's the first person Arthur goes to when finally deciding
to settle down and propose to Mithian, his girlfriend of three years. Merlin, as always, speaks his mind when asked, and isn't afraid to put Arthur in his place when necessary, and is 100% supportive of Arthur and Mithian because he knows she is good for Arthur and makes Arthur happy, and that is all Merlin ever wanted for Arthur (even if a little part of him breaks with each faked smile and forced laugh). The day Arthur shows up on Merlin's doorstep, full of jitters and an unstoppable grin pronouncing, "I'm going to be a Dad!" Merlin knows their lives were never meant to be any other way. Then again, in less than a year Arthur's life is turned upside-down and inside-out: Mithian gives birth to a beautiful little boy, but she only lives long enough to bestow a kiss and say the child's name, leaving Arthur to raise their son alone, and if that isn't a big enough hurdle to jump, Arthur discovers that his son is deaf.

Uther and Arthur have a strained relationship, and while they might have bonded (or more commiserated) over the similarities of the passing of their wives, Arthur believing this one horrible event is a turning point for them and he will finally have a normal father-son relationship with Uther, the rug is pulled from beneath him, at a time he needs the support of family the most, when Arthur's son's disability is realized. I want an Uther that isn't scathingly horrible, but still sees Arthur's son as something inferior and incapable of living up to the Pendragon legacy. All Arthur sees is his son, the one person in the world he vows to protect and love to his dying breath. He wants the best of everything for his son, beginning with hiring a care taker to not only be a nanny
but also teach his son (and him) sign language and help adjust him the best way possible for the world outside the protective walls of their home.

Re-Enter Merlin, who loves kids (Uncle Merlin to Lancelot and Gwen's twin girls) and has known sign language since he was
a kid himself due to his own mother being deaf (I still want his mother to be Hunith), even receiving the proper certifications and degrees to work within the school systems to help hearing disabled children. Arthur discovers Merlin between jobs for whatever reason (funding cuts or politics...), and reaches out to his best friend with the most lucrative job offer anyone else would be crazy to turn down. Merlin, at first, thinks it's just Arthur taking pity on him (even though he knows the job isn't something made up, because there must be someone more capable than him), and initially turns it down. I'd like to see a typical Arthur-Merlin argument and in the end, Arthur admitting Merlin is the only person he trusts with the care of his son. Of course in the end, Merlin recants his decision and moves into Arthur's home to take care and teach Arthur's son, and in the end take care of Arthur too.

All those years ago, it's not that Arthur didn't see Merlin in a romantic way, it was just he was so focused on impressing his father, that even thinking of Merlin as anything more than a friend was risking certain death in the eyes of Uther, and now after everything he's been through, it seems rather foolish to deny what he felt so long ago (what he still feels now), but is it too late for them?

returned to Camelot after he died. That none of them, not even Gaius, has heard a word from him.
