Uther and Gaius are everything I hope Arthur and Merlin DON'T turn out to be. felix_aeternusOctober 11 2010, 15:39:52 UTC
The way I see it: Uther and Gaius were close friends from when they were younger - a la Arthur/Merlin - and Uther clearly also know that Gaius had connections and did sorcery himself (although how much power he has is unclear). They're close, but not close enough for Uther to confess about Viviane and Morgana. However, close enough that when Morgause was born, they smuggled her out together (I also believe Gorlois was a mutual friend? not sure). This isn't dissimilar to...say, Arthur/Merlin/Morgana sneaking Mordred out of the kingdom. True, we're not sure why Morgause was smuggled out, but at the end, I think it is/will be more or less the same relationship between Morgause/Uther, and Mordred/Arthur (i.e. they want each other dead

Want. Want. Want. A thousand times Want. This was my first ship in the series and by far still my favorite because of the complexity of their positions and the unhappy truths that there’s no real easy answers for problems Uther and Gaius find themselves in- ever. while I’ll concede most of the problems they do find themselves in are old sins come back to haunt them- they have to walk that very thin line and preserving the peace (both inside the royal household and for Camelot in general

Sadly we’re never shown the world Uther and Gaius grew up in, and it’s never spoken of apart from it was chaotic and war torn; Dragons and Sidhe had free reign alongside peaceful Druids. We don’t know if they were friends from youth, or men who allied themselves together when Uther became King. We don’t even know- although I tend to lend myself in this direction if Uther was a servant of the Isle for no other reason because at that time, most were. But what we do know is that when Igraine died, Camelot was left with a grieving King wholly unprepared to be peacekeeper and father both. We have a King, who by definition was a warrior first- never one who had use of peace- so it goes to make sense he defaulted back to war. If you can’t live with the enemy, destroy them. And their kids too to keep them from growing up and coming after you. It’s not nice but it’s effective. His only voice of reason was his physician- who warned Uther he’d lose something precious but most importantly, stayed by his side without thought of safety to his
