LIST OF THINGS MERLIN BORROWS FROM:

-The Princess Bride (Lancelot's backstory = Inigo's, having devoted his entire life to learning to fight after having watched his family be slaughtered as a child; Arthur and Merlin's poisoned goblets on the beach scene mirrors Westley and Vizzini's scene quite closesly; they legitimately had ROUS's on the show in the form of the wildren; Mary Collins is the scary-looking Ancient Booer in the courtyard; Sir Oswald is not left-handed, but was just trying to make the fight last a bit longer; the scene where "Sir Oswald" and "Sir Ethan" are quite obviously dead and Uther asks Gaius if there's anything he can do for them = Miracle Max with the mostly-dead vs. all-dead)

-Monty Python and the Holy Grail (it's more that there's a lot of crossover potential, but there are the basic Arthurian legend spoofs; the Black Knight; the "burn the witch" scene seems to match the anti-magic logic at times; Anhora = Tim the Enchanter with his random and unecessary teleporting being as useless as Tim's explosions; Will = Dennis the peasant with his automatic disdain for the current class system and his need to loudly voice his opinions on the matter; etc)

-Pirates of the Carribean (some of the skeleton scenes in 3x02 seemed to be taken directly from it)

-Lord of the Rings (music seems heavily inspired by it; the cinematography of the scenes from 2x11 with the knights of medhir riding resemble the 'riding across New Zealand' scenes; battle of Helm's Deep [and even lines about Camelot as an impenetrable fortress] in 3x02)

-Harry Potter (goblin = Dobby; Merlin riding a hippogriff dragon; Merlin catches the snitch goblin with his mouth; labyrinth = triwizard maze complete with vines that reach out and tie you up; plus John Hurt)

-A Knight's Tale (the whole plot from 'The Once and Future Queen', as well as parts of 'Lancelot')

-Titanic (Merlin's having a "King of the World!" moment on that dragon; Sigan's jewel = great big blue Heart of the Ocean, anyone?)

-Braveheart (again, the music seems to have been inspired by it, particularly Lancelot's theme/the main love theme)

Wow. I mean.. wow.

OMG. I would never have come up with something like.. this.
But I see where you're coming from. ;D
Haven't seen all of those films, though.

lol Yeah, I might've given the topic too much thought, but it's mostly because I'm always looking for parallels for icon-making purposes ;)

Oh, now I see who requested this topic! :p Lol, I thought the skeletons were reminiscent of the ones we see Giles briefly fighting in Tabula Rasa, but probably because it was Anthony Stewart Head, and the CGI was similarly crappy in both cases! ;)

John Hurt was in HP? :s And loll I did think of Buckbeak's flight during that scene, and his "King of the World" gesture which had been in that scene in HP.

Also the gryffins in this series (seen in 1x05) totally look like hypogriffs!

lol I admit to being a part of the off-topic discussion that inspired this one, but I wasn't alone ;)

I can see the similarities with 'Tabula Rasa' as well (and I've heard a lot of people compare those scenes to 'Jason and the Argonauts', but I've never seen that, so the parallel didn't occur to me). Maybe all living-skeleton fights just have the same underlying dynamic to them? lol

John Hurt was Ollivander in the first HP movie (and will return for the last one(s) ), which is actually where I first heard of him.

They so do!! I laughed my head off the first time I saw 1x05, because they'd obviously used the hippogriff prototype as a starting point there.

I believe the starting point was a debate whether Arthur was Buttercup and Merlin was Westley... or maybe the other way around.

lol I think you're right.

I'm disappointed as well. Poor Buckbeak griffin, getting killed before its big Harry Potter moment. You know Lancelot's hair would've looked epic riding that thing ;)

But masks are terribly comfortable! I expect everyone will be wearing them in the future. ;)

Merlin would look great in the Dread Pirate Roberts outfit. He needs some additions to his wardrobe in general lol

Yes....I dare say some borrowed imagery effects went on here :)

HP = Merlin, Buckbeak = Dragon

I can't remember the Tabula Rasa buffy episode, but I'll take your word that the skeletons were vaguely reminiscent...haha.

The crossover potential for Monty Python is totally fabulous. XD

Also YES, I was getting a LOTR vibe that WHOLE episode, haha. Like when Morgause slow-mo arrives at Cenred's castle I was like "Oh, Cenred lives in Edoras, does he?"

That icon. Is the best. Thing. Ever. Every time I see it, it makes me happy :D

lol The LOTR vibes seem to get extra strong around Morgause. She must be a fan.

I used to have one of Anhora requesting a shrubbery but alas, I deleted it!
