Favourite under-appreciated Merlin/Arthur fics?
Hello! I'm looking for Merlin/Arthur fics that you love and think are brilliant but that aren't considered the 'fandom staples' or don't often get recced or suggested here because i think i've probably already read the majority of those. So, yeah, bascially just your favourite under-appreciated fics please

To start off, I personally like combing through people's master fic lists since that's how you really find the hidden gems. I've left three asterisks beside author's names who have more fics in their lj pages that are worth the effort of digging up. Okay, so here it goes:

I just love reading sly!Merlin. Some might find it too OOC, but it is my secret hope that when Merlin finally grows into his magic, he'd be this confident, sexy guy.

In retrospect, I find it rather shocking how I have so easily accepted the fact that the Merlin fandom, and the Merlin/Arthur fandom in particular, is like, 90% PORN. (And deserving of the all-caps.) Looking at my fic collection, I realized that porn in the M/A fandom is not even a genre, as such, but a veritable movement! On the bright side, the majority of the fic in said movement is Fantastically Well-Written, and this particular specimen is a fine example.

You may have read many of this author's fics already, but I had to rec this fic in particular since it just doesn't get recced enough. Plus, you should take a look at her Bradley/Colin stuff. I personally find them to be the best fics to start you off on that particular pairing.

Both Merlin's and Arthur's characters are written very well here, but it is the environment, with all the alien elements that the author has magically melded with the original canon setting, that really shines here. As a bonus, this fic has made me nostalgic for Naomi Novik's Temeraire series.

I haven't really looked at the fics in this particular community, but there are bound to be excellent fics there, as this fic can attest. You might want to dig up openskies's fics in the community, since the author's personal lj is f-locked.

Merlin's and Arthur's characters are given whole new lives and the complexities that come with said lives, and it's a wonder that you wouldn't think while reading that the characters are totally OOC already, but the author pulls it off so easily. It's like, they're totally different people, totally ordinary and not even close to becoming larger-than-life in any way, and yet they're still Arthur and Merlin! I absolutely love fics that can pull this off.
