"don't you wish things were different?"

morgana does, sometimes. for mordred. he's so small - she keeps forgetting how strong his spirit is. mayhap she'd like to see him running and playing with other children, but the druids' children are few, and the few of them are gone all the time.

mordred leaves as well, with or without merlin, never with her. she's slowly understanding differences she wouldn't have thought of: mothers teach their daughters, fathers teach their sons.

"sometimes", she probes.

tired after a full workday, she sits down; her head rests on merlin's shoulder. their heads touch. she feels safe.

"i wish he had what i had, as a child."

he closes his eyes to muffle his anger. "and what was that, morgana - growing hiding skills?"

"i still had friends."

"you had gwen. one friend. that's never enough."

morgana flinches; he grasps her hand, instead.

"forgive me."

"stop leaving so often."

"there are things our son has to learn."

she knows, she has learnt it soon enough. her eyes seek mordred hastily; he's nowhere to be seen. her chest heaves in a deep sigh.

"you and i -" merlin's voice changes " - will make a beautiful daughter."

"we should."
