There had been a careful balance to their relationship, and Igraine had been the center. It had been her laughter that could coax Uther from his stormy tempers and her joy that could crack Niumeh's imperious shell. Indeed, for all Uther's might and Nimueh's power, Igraine had seemed the invincible one, too fair and wonderful to be tainted by death, a fantasy come to life.
But the fantasy crumbled, and Uther and Nimueh found that they could not keep the balance, could not find equal ground.
And they never thought how Igraine would have wept to see them so unstable.
