One adventure. That’s what he’d promised Sarah Jane when the TARDIS had landed practically on her doorstop. One adventure for old times sake and then he’d have her back in South Croydon in time for work. Earth to the Eye of Orion and back to Earth again. It should have been simple.

When had anything in his life been simple?

“This is not Earth, Doctor,” Sarah Jane whispered as they ducked down behind a large rock. When he didn’t respond she poked him with her finger. “You said one trip with no danger. That was the deal.”

“Shhhh.” The rocks were moving. Some hundred yards away a mound of rock was uncurling, revealing itself to be humanoid in form. A memory stirred, but these rock creatures are not held together by magma and he doesn’t have a plastic gun filled with water.

“Doctor,” Sarah whispered urgently as the rock creature started towards them. “Don’t you think we should...”

His hand reached down and found hers, their fingers intertwining. “Run, Sarah Jane.”

They ran hard and fast, struggling to stay upright on the pitted surface of the planet. He could hear Sarah’s laboured breathing and even his own physiology was strained. It had been years since he’d had to run like this.

It felt good.

“Why are you smiling like that?” Sarah demands to know when they made it back to the TARDIS and she collapsed on the floor.

His smile grew wider. “Because that was fun.”
