SO... I have recently found myself with some extra time on my hands and have sorely missed being a beta reader/editor over the years.
Thought I'd repost my details here - see if I can get back into the swing of things.
Name to call you by: Hi, I'm Anna!
Best way to contact you, (email, pm, comment, twitter, etc): Comment, PM, Email (check my profile)
Genres you are not open to betaing, (modernAU, PWP, angst, etc): Nothing in particular.
Pairings you are not open to betaing: None, though I do lean to M/A ;D
Warnings/kinks you are not open to betaing, (character death, non-con, etc): Not a huge fan of some of the more hard-core kinks (some mild BDSM is fine tho) and explicit non-con. But TBH I don’t have to like it to do a quick SPAG check, if that’s all the writer wants.
Length of fics you are able to beta, (any, short, long, onshots, etc): I’ll work on just about anything; obviously writers will get a shorter turn around for shorter fic. But if there’s no hurry, I’ll take on an epic, no worries!
What you focus on when you beta, (grammar, flow, consistency, readability, etc): I find myself focusing on SPAG and readability. I am a very visual reader. So, if something doesn’t read logically - it reads like it’s not physically possible - my mind is immediately stuck on it and I NEED to FIX! Also, illogical chronology/flow of time, and OOC-ness will jump out at me.
Sometimes we need a beta who won't hold any punches. Are you willing to be tough and break a fic apart if asked, (yes/no): Yes, I believe I would.
Other languages you'd be able to beta in: Just English, I’m afraid.
How long a 5000 word fic typically takes you: Maybe an hour or two turn around, once I have it in my hand, if the writer needs it NOW. But I'd be more comfortable with 24 hours.
Name a fic or two you've beta'd before for reference, if available (no worries, if you can't): It’s been pretty sporadic over the years, but I’ve beta’d for GeekLover/GeekSlave (
Cinderella Wasn’t A Clotpole), Kay_Drew (
No One Even Knows) and Thursday_Next (
Ivy and Amaranth)
Any additional information: Some more detail into how I beta: For large things (something more than punctuation, capitalization, or the like) I like to make comments in the doc, but I try not to be too harsh. If there is something that is repeatedly wrong (more than once per page), I’m not gonna go marking every instance of this error. I’ll leave a thoughtful comment and explain what the writer is doing and how it can be fixed. Also, I never want the writer to feel like I’m taking over a fic by completely re-write sentences or paragraphs, so I like to give suggestions and offer assistance as to how a particularly awkward piece could be re-worded.
…And that’s it! Any questions, please ask.
