Merlin often wondered how Arthur did it. How he managed to wear a mask of compliance with Uther's sometimes wrong decisions.
In a way, though, Merlin was doing the same. Although it became harder and harder, he forced his instincts to not give in to the magic swirling around inside him. He forced himself to not give in to blurting out something worse than 'prat' at Uther when he didn't agree.
And he had to work the hardest to not lock Arthur's door, push him up against the wall and kiss him silly.
They both wore a mask.
