I submitted the following as a firing line to The Daily Texan. It's in response to the two idiots who you can read on
this page. Enjoy.
The American Heritage Dictionary gives the definition of marriage as “the legal union of a man and woman.” I read several other definitions, and while none included anything about the next generation, the words “legal union” or some variant were pretty prominent. Many also included a definition that specifically covered same sex couples.
Throughout history, marriage was a matter of economic convenience. It is interesting that so many people wish to protect the “institution” of marriage. If people had been so adamant in the past, wives would still basically be the property of their husbands. Black people wouldn’t be allowed to marry, and if they were, they would have to stay within their race.
Why are people so opposed to change anyway? If a group is truly interested in the furtherance of the human race, they would recognize that we, as a society, as human beings, are evolving and advocate changing along with it. As for not being able to just change a word’s definition, I beg to differ. We’re changing and our language is changing with us. Remember when you could only wear a boot, as opposed to booting up a computer?
Many who are opposed to gay marriage support civil unions. History has shown that separate but equal is not equal. If it is the same thing, but we call it something else, then it is not the same thing. I don’t understand what causes people to think they can withhold freedoms from other people.
