That was fun… sort of.
I went to see
Transformers with
slanebugontoast Monday night at 11:15pm. All day I had been feeling sickish, like if I had food poisoning or something. It was bad enough that I almost called my friend and canceled, but I haven’t hung out with him for a LONG time and really didn’t want to hurt his feelings after a weekend of email exchanges where we set up what time we would go… also I really wanted to see the movie.
All evening, before leaving the house, I kept saying to myself that “what’s the worst that could happen… I pay almost $10 to see half of a movie?” This was an acceptable risk in my mind. If nothing else I would be able to see my friend for a few minutes.
So the lights finally dimmed and the previews began with me still not feeling all that well. Luckily I had my soda and water that I snuck into the theater. Although the water seemed to make me feel worse for some reason and I kept thinking to myself “why would bottled water make me feel worse that soda?” I still don’t know why.
Suddenly the theater went black for a moment; signaling the welcomed end to the previews and the beginning of the movie. Wow… great opening! Michael Bay did a good job on this one. Then the action began and it was, to use an expeltive, Fucking AWESOME! Within in moments I was engrossed in the movie with 300 other movie goers, silently oooing and aweing and the special effects; becoming emotionally invested in the characters and anxiously waiting for our childhood hero Optimus Prime to make his appearance.
The 2:20 minute run time of the movie seemed to pass quickly, making it easier to ignore my not feeling so well. Then, about 2 hours into the movie, as the story was just beginning its climactic end that, at this point, everyone knew would be well worth the ticket price, the standing in line waiting for them to let us into the theater and the hideously overpriced concessions, it happened.
As the screen lit up with a flash of intense drama our collective attention was drawn to the fire exit on the far left of the theater. For a moment all we saw was an unusual light coming from the shadow. Then the light illuminated the outline of a teenage boy dressed in a pulled over hooded jacket. Within less than a second a sparkly colorful light shown from the boy’s hand. A millisecond later the light exploded sending huge streams of colored fire soaring through the theater. Then another explosion hit as the fire exit door flung open and the teenage boy rushed out. This sent more burning streams of light through the theater. A moment later we all sat there in shock and still dazed; looking around to see if anyone had been hurt. Luckily everyone was fine. Then 6 or 7 people jumped out of their seat and chased after the boy but were unfortunately never able to catch him. A minute went by as some tried to return their attention to the movie and others continued to look around for signs of the boy having been captured.
As the smoke from the fireworks began to fill the theater, the streams of light from the projector added a unique feel to the movie. It was like being at a drive-in movie on a lightly foggy night. Then the sulfuric odor from the explosion began to be noticed. It was strong. Not overwhelmingly strong but probably at a level that is unhealthy for those with breathing problems.
As the theater people ran in to assess the situation we noticed 4 guys down by the left bottom of the screen. They seemed to be pouring their drinks on it. Immediately we all knew that if the theater caught on fire we would be in trouble. A moment later one of the theater employees began yelling and motioning with her hands for us to evacuate the theater. Suddenly a huge synchronous grown filled the theater as many wanted to stay and finish the movie. Only seconds later the projector was turned off and another loud moan filled the theater as we continued to make our way toward the main theater entrance.
We all made our way to the service counter to receive our readmission tickets and then stepped outside to see the whirling lights of 3 fire trucks lined up in a row in front of the building. There were 3 more fire trucks waiting at the entrance to the parking lot in case they were needed.
By now we were no longer in a shared experience as some were in the bathroom, others were outside smoking and the rest trying to decide how long they should wait and watch the drama. I stood with talking with my friend for another 10-15 minutes while those that decided to leave got in their cars and left the parking lot. Then we said our goodbyes, got into our cars and went our separate ways.
So yeah… it was a little bit exciting and luckily no one was hurt. Though I imagine if they had captured the guy that did it, he would be in seriously bad shape at the moment… and he would totally deserve it!
