“You’re blushing! You’re blushing! Mariemaia, you’re blushing!” Josh exclaimed, leaning in close as if to study the phenomena. This, of course, only made Mariemaia blush harder.

Mariemaia stopped blushing suddenly and stared at Josh with growing horror. “Oh my,” she whispered, bringing a hand to her mouth. It couldn’t be true!

“What’s wrong?” Josh asked looking a bit concerned himself. He edged even closer. “Are you alright? You’re too young for hot flushes, right? Right? What if you aren’t? You might not have children, Mariemaia! We must freeze your eggs!”

“Children,” Mariemaia mouthed, backing away when Josh tried to grab her shoulders. He gave her a hurt look and started to pout. “I’m a bit young for, aren’t I?” Mariemaia hadn’t even thought of children like this before!

“Well, yes,” Josh hedged. “Maybe not. Physically at least you look… prepared,” he said, giving her body a rather inquisitive look and gesturing in a vague manner to her torso‘s general direction. Mariemaia fidgeted and fought the urge to cover her body with her arms and hide. “Not that I can really tell what with it being winter and the bagginess that is our school uniforms and you covered up in what must be a hundred layers.”

“Right, way too young,” Mariemaia murmured.

Josh gave her a stern look. “You’re not going to discriminate against teenage mothers, are you Mariemaia?”

“No!” Mariemaia exclaimed, waving her hands in denial. Now she was blushing again, she cursed internally.

“You know,” Josh said thoughtfully. “I’ve completely forgotten what this conversation first started to be about. I expect I‘m going insane.”

“Yeah, me too. Except for the insane part,” Mariemaia mumbled. But she was lying.

She had blushed because she though Josh looked cute.

So maybe she was lying about being insane as well. Josh was her friend after all!

Thus Mariemaia found her way to Preventers HQ with some rather intriguing questions on her mind. She positioned herself outside Lady Une’s office and started to wait. It wasn’t long before Lady Une returned.

“Une,” Mariemaia said, swinging her legs on the chair one last time before leaping up and following her guardian into her office. Lady Une gave her a frazzled look.

“Can this wait, Mariemaia?” Lady Une murmured, as three minions followed her in, each one looking more cowed than the last.

“I suppose,” Mariemaia said doubtfully. She eyed the men without pity. She knew too well what happened when you didn’t do what Lady Une told you. Like the dishes.

“We’ll talk when I get home,” Lady Une. She gave her underlings a narrow glare. “I just a few things to take care of. A little spring cleaning you could say,” she continued an edge of steel in her voice.

“Okay, it was,” Mariemaia sighed, already on her way out of Lady Une’s office. “I just wanted to know when you started dating my father.” Then left with a quick, “Goodbye!”

Lady Une stilled and almost looked frozen for a brief moment.

“Ma’am?” One rather stupid Preventer inquired.

“Singh,” Lady Une ground out. “This is going to be quicker than you had imagined but much, much more painful.”

He gulped.

On the way out Mariemaia was jolted to attention when someone called out her name. She looked up and around in search of that very person. “Wufei!” She called out, smiling and waving as he made his way over to her.

“Visiting Lady Une?” He asked.

“Yeah, I just had a few questions,” Mariemaia said, looking at once more downcast. She shuffled, “I have one for you as well, but, it’s just kind of hard to say and um.”

“You can ask me,” Wufei said.

“When did you start dating my father?” Mariemaia asked. “Like, when you were fifteen or something? Because that’s how old you were during the War and before he,” she quavered, “He died. Right? So that’s a good age to start dating?”

“I have to leave now,” Wufei muttered, brushing past her.

“Wait! Wait! You said you would answer Wufei!” Mariemaia yelled, chasing after Wufei.

“I - fine, but we do this in my office,” Wufei mumbled, ears bright red. Mariemaia beamed. “But with my office door open.”

“Okay,” Mariemaia agreed, shrugging, “Whatever you want.”

Well, Wufei mused as his colleagues eyed him with suspicion; this was going to create even more awkward conversation.

“So,” Wufei said, trying to broach the subject as quickly as possible, yet as discreetly as possible. “What made you think I was… dating your father?”

She sighed, “It was obvious! You seemed like you were in love with him and you don’t date anyone, like Une, so I just thought it was because the one true love of life was dead and you were living in his honour.”

“Er, right,” Wufei said, jerkily. God, Wufei thought, he hoped Duo never learned of this conversation.

“And you were fifteen, right? Like I am now? So it’s alright for me to start dating?” Mariemaia questioned.

“Uh,” Wufei really wished he was on a high risk assignment right now. “I wasn’t in love with your father. I just admired him greatly.”

Mariemaia gave him a narrow glare which eerily reminded Wufei of the glares Lady Une could give. “Of course,” she said, obviously not believing him. “But fifteen is a good age?”

“It depends really on what Lady Une says,” Wufei muttered, now knowing that his boss was going to send him on a high risk mission after she learned of this particular conversation.

“Hmm,” Mariemaia. “I’ll ask tonight. But,” and here she looked at him thoughtfully, “So why don’t you date?”

“Wufei wouldn’t answer me when I asked him why he wouldn’t date,” Mariemaia muttered moodily to Lady Une at dinner that night.

“It was a rather personal question,” Lady Une said.

“I suppose,” Mariemaia said. “But it is weird! I’ve never seen him with a girl! Or a boy!”

“Maybe he has to be discreet,” Lady Une murmured.

Mariemaia’s brow furrowed. “Like, he visits prostitutes?”

“I - probably not,” Lady Une muttered. God, she thought, you owe me for this Chang. “But why don’t you tell me what you were worried about, Mariemaia?”

“I’ve known for a long time that you loved my father,” Mariemaia whispered, “You don’t need to hide that from me, okay?”

“Okay,” Lady Une promised, leaning over and squeezing Mariemaia’s hand.

“I just wanted to know when you started, started loving him,” Mariemaia mumbled.

Lady Une smiled.

“You’re so quiet today,” Josh muttered, “If I wanted to be friends with a mute, I would be. But I want to be friends with you!”

“We’ve been friends a long time, haven’t we?” Mariemaia asked.

“Oh god. This sounds serious,” Josh groaned. “You’re not dying, are you? Because then I would have to give a speech, being your best friend and all, and well… Mariemaia was a great friend and - ”

“I’m not dying!”

“ - everyone will miss her. Her smile, her weird pattern of speech and the way her eyes screwed up when she was angry,” Josh murmured, laughing as Mariemaia chased him.

“I don’t talk weird!” Mariemaia said and shoved him lightly. He caught her wrists and grinned at her. She elbowed him and escaped with a wink.

“But your eyes do screw up when you’re angry,” Josh said. “I can’t lie at your funeral, can I? Well I guess I can, since you’re dead but you know some scary people and if I said you were a crack dealer or sold organs on the black market I seriously think one of them would kill me.”

“I’m not dying,” Mariemaia repeated.

“Well, yeah,” Josh said, blinking at her confusion. “You’re here.”

She was, Mariemaia realised. Then she kissed him. Though it was more a peck on the lips.

“God,” Josh breathed out.

“Speaking,” Mariemaia murmured.

“Ha ha,” Josh said, but he was grinning at her like she had just gotten him a 1980’s mint edition Bumblebee toy.

“That’s it?” Mariemaia asked.

“I really, like, really really want to do more. But seriously? I think we’re being watched and I like being alive and well, I think those people have guns!” Josh whispered, swivelling his head back.

“I’m going to have to do everything, aren’t I?” She muttered. So Mariemaia kissed him again.
