hehe... not sure how subtle it is, but...

After giving his approval on the last of the arrangements for the ‘party’ planned three days hence, Quatre felt the slight twinge in his middle. The smile he’d worn throughout the day flickered; Duo had said unequivocally - no help! Quatre recited silently from his mental list of how he wasn’t helping.

Number one, it was a business gathering of a hundred (or three) company heads and department presidents he was currently doing business with, or had done business with in the past. Did it matter that at least a dozen invitations were sent to respectable company’s transportation directors?

Number two, Duo was the CEO of his company. That he also was the company’s main laborer, bookkeeper, and best deliveryman didn’t have to be stated. If it worked out, as Quatre believed it would, the next annual WEI business gathering should have Duo the CEO of more than the five employees and three transport ships.

Number three, Quatre wouldn’t go so far as to hint for favors. For one, most of the jackasses would do it - anything to garner his good graces. For another, he wanted Duo’s business to flourish, not be flooded. A simple introduction here and there, and stepping back to let Duo do his own networking should have it covered.

Number four, regardless of how developing contacts from the ‘party’ go, Duo will have to stand or fall on his own. Quatre didn’t have an investment in Duo’s business, and kept his nose out of its processes.

Number five, and the most important one to Quatre, he was Duo’s best friend (Heero aside), and if he couldn’t ignore just a little bit of Duo’s request, than he didn’t deserve to be called a ‘friend’.

Smile in place once again, Quatre returned to the contract the company lawyers sent over for his review.

That's about as subtle as Quatre gets I suspect.
