That is gorgeous and I love love love the title! I almost clapped my hands just now at my computer :D
Tentacles...I think tentacles were kind of A Thing on their own, and have gotten mixed up with steampunk because of the Lovecraft/Poe/Verne vibe, and also because steampunk really mixes up with everything. If there are steampunk purists who actually care about, I dunno, steam driven things, then they are the tiniest minority, because the rest of steampunk culture is all about invading other things and covering them with gears :P I suppose that's the main difference between steampunk the genre and steampunk the aesthetic? I just know I like looking at all of it.
As for why tentacles were already A Thing--if I had to hazard a guess I would blame Japan, but I have to admit that I see things with tentacles and usually go 'ooooh' but couldn't tell you why (if I don't go ooooh I generally go 'aaaaaugh!' I couldn't tell you what the difference is there, either).
Who knows, but people like 'em! It's like owls. I kind of like owls (like tentacles, I go 'ooooh' when I see owl stuff, but I've never collected them or anything), but one day I woke up and EVERYONE LIKED OWLS. Liked them a lot. Cultural saturation is a weird thing, that's for sure.
Thank you! I did like the name of this mask too. :) It's going to be even cuter because the next one I make will have a jeweler's swing arm magnification loupe attached to it as well. Fun fun!
Cultural saturation is indeed weird. I know what I like, but I often like things just for the "look" of them alone. I love the pseudo industrial look of steampunk (especially the "antique technology" of Victorian era watches and gearworks etc...it's all so wonderfully made and beautiful), but I don't quite understand the subculture.
*shrug* I guess I don't really have to. I can just make pretty things and let others interpret as they will.
