Potatoes come out of boxes? Gross, lol. Potatoes are so absurdly easy I don't see the point in making a 'convenience' version. Scalloped takes a bit of work, but even scalloped is pretty darned easy, it just takes extra time for the thin slicing. (Not that I would make scalloped unless forced. They're icky. Onions and potatoes and butter are well enough, but all that milk, on a potato? YUCK.) But it's nice that you did dinner to your satisfaction, so that you didn't get stuck with so much work that there wasn't really any way to have fun. You kind of have to make all the bits you can as easy as you can if no one is going to help; it's too much work for one if you try to do everything from scratch.
You made the rolls, of all things? You know, making the potatoes and BUYING the rolls would have been the easier way to go, lol. (Or are you just saying that you had to make sure you bought high quality rolls?)
Is Charlotte only a vegetarian for health reasons? I don't think I ever asked that before, come to think of it. (I can totally see sneaking a taste if you don't object to meat for moral reasons, only health reasons.) I guess I just assumed. (For some reason the majority of vegetarians seem to be in it for moral reasons; you'd think there'd be a larger proponent of people concerned for health/environmental reasons. As for me, I just don't LIKE the stuff, it doesn't taste very good and the texture is disgusting. I really FEEL like I'm chewing flesh, and that's grody. Of course, I still eat it occasionally since I have no moral objection and I don't get enough protein as it is.)
Anyway...it's 6AM, I've got stuff to do. :) Have a relaxing weekend; the drive must always be exhausting.
Instant mashed potatoes aren't that bad if you make them correctly. :) I keep them on hand 'cause when Kiba's tummy gets oogy, it's one thing he can eat. That dog is such a delicate flower.
I think Char initially became a vegetarian because she's a bleeding heart and PETA horrified her with awful pictures once, a long time ago. I guess she's decided that if she eats meat off MY plate, I'm assuming all the moral responsibility for that meat being there. Perhaps.
Our dogs eat oatmeal. They LOVE it and it never makes them sick (they only get it if they are sick or if the dog food ran out through bad planning...we don't get out dog food in town.)
My family hates reconstituted potatoes, thinks they're an abomination. My sister is downright vociferous about it :) We'd think better of purchased gravy than 'fake' potatoes, but that's just the life we have. Potatoes for us are fast and easy when done naturally. (Not that I'd eat fake gravy either. Can't. It has all kind of frightening stuff in it. And when I say 'fake' I really ought to be saying 'commercially made'.)
My moral issue with meat is the incredible environmental toll that meat-farming takes...everyone really should eat less, though I'm not sure total vegetarianism would be necessary for anyone. Though I'm not a vegetarian myself, of course. I eat so little meat though that I might as well just call myself one. Except sometimes I actually TRY to eat meat in an effort to get more protein. I do like meat as a flavouring, like in broth, or bacon on an otherwise veggie sub, etc.
