Random Food Craving ;-)

Jan 23, 2005 21:00

I'd love to have about a half-dozen Krystal burgers right about now. Alas, the closest Krystal to me is about 700 miles south of here, and I don't think I'd be able to drive down there and back in time to go to work in the morning ;-) So, I'll just have to keep scarfing down this box of Food Lion-brand animal crackers instead...

I don't know how the taste compares but those look a bit like White Castle.

You're absolutely right :-) Krystals are basically a southern version of White Castle. And as much as I like White Castles (having grown up in Columbus, Ohio, I ate many a White Castle as a young lad), I think Krystals are much tastier. It's hard to describe the difference in taste, though. I guess one way to describe it would be that the meat in Krystals is a bit more seasoned (i.e. salt and black pepper) than that used in White Castles.

Phooey. Now I want both Krystals and White Castles so I can do a taste comparison ;-) IIRC, Nashville, TN, is the only city where you can find both White Castle and Krystal. But I don't think I can make an overnight road trip there, either *chuckle*.

Interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a Krystal. I may have to go a bit further South than Virginia for that.

I think the northernmost Krystal on the far East Coast is in Bristol, Virginia/Tennessee (the state line goes right through the middle of the city, and I'm not sure which side of the line it's on). Other than a handful of them in Kentucky, they're all south of the Virginia/Tennessee border...

I'd recommend a carne asada super burrito with extra meat from El Farolito instead, but that'd be even less convenient. ^_^ But, oh, so good.. plenty of good, tasty steak, with all the other ingredients you'd expect (plus rice, being in the Mission), forming a hefty log suitable for two meals. ^_^ And they're open 'til around 2am, too.

Years ago, I used to drop by a then-local burger joint now and then - no atmosphere, nothing to pull you there other than just the burgers. Well seasoned, genuinely flame cooked (you could see it all), and gods, their garlic mayonnaise burger was just wonderful. Probably a nutritional nightmare, but wow.. and plenty of (fresh) garlic, too.

Oh, that burrito sounds most excellent :-) I could go for one of those right about now. Or one of those garlic mayonnaise burgers...

After moving from Chicago to Burbank, I can definitely say that I'm going to miss White Castle.

But I'd say that In-n-Out Burger more than makes up for it. Sadly, you probably won't ever see them too far east of here, since they're family owned. (Although there's one in Vegas, if you find yourself there.)

I'd sell my soul for an In-N-Out burger right this very minute. Spread and lettuce, buns well-toasted. Mmm-mmmmm! :-9 Sometimes with mustard, too, and grilled onions. The fries I can live without, but those burgers... there was a time in my 20s when practically every molecule in my body was made from In-N-Out hamburgers. ;-) Closest In-N-Out is in Santa Rosa, which is just about a 4-hour drive one way. Ah well. Just a little too far for a night's road trip. But there've been times I've been tempted...!

We ate at an In-N-Out when I made my first trip west back in January 1996, didn't we? I have to admit that the start of that trip is a bit of a blur, seeing as how we started it down at CF7 before driving back up north. We'll have to hit an In-N-Out again some day when I'm out west, and I'll have to find a way to get you to a Krystal one day.

At this point, I'd be happy with a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings from Sonic, but it looks like the closest Sonic to me is ~500 miles away in eastern Ohio. Phooey :-P If I'm going to drive to Ohio in search of food, I may as well go to White Castle ;-)
