Finished: The Tortilla Curtain; by T. Coraghessan Boyle; [CONTemporary FICTION]

Not exactly funny -- too many painful things happen; then again, sometimes they happen to people who deserve them. Good reading for residents of California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, especially for those who are feeling overrun by our amigos from the south. Basically, everybody's just trying to make a living, folks. Get over it.

Started: Miss Leavitt's Stars; by George Johnson; [ASTROnomy]

Have you ever wondered how in the heck astronomers know how far away stars, nebulas, and galaxies are? If not, this book will first tell you that you should have wondered; after all, we can't (sadly) just drive over there and read the odometer. Then it tells everyone, in reasonably easy-to-understand explanations, just how they did figure it out. Turns out that Henrietta Leavitt played a significant role in that astronomical endeavor.
