Edit to add: Poor Christchurch just keeps on getting thumped - they tried to turn the power back on in the central city. Unfortunately a gas main had broken and a spark set the building on fire - and there was no water pressure. (They're showing live pictures).
Ironically, the mayor and the prime minister were standing outside the building at the time - they're alright. Unfortunately. Heheheh.

I am dealing with my earthquake anxiety by putting together a slipshod emergency kit to keep by the front door. I've pulled out the 20L water container and filled it (glad I stole that from my sister and 'forgot' to put it back) - that's definitely more than the three days supply of water per person that they recommend you have. That's about six days supply for me, or five for me and the cats. I've also grabbed stuff like the first aid kit, rice and pasta, and the random tinned food I keep in the cupboard (I don't keep much anymore which is a problem!) - so I have rice, pasta, tinned tomatos, lentils, fruit salad, evaporated milk and one can of stew. Heheheh. It's a bit random, but hey if I'm starving it'll do! And I have one advantage - three days supply of food for me is about one day's supply for a normal person. I will, over the next few weeks as I can, actually put something proper together - get cans of food that are actually edible as is (soup, stews, beans etc) and some milk powder type things. It's something I should have done anyway and kept thinking I should, so this was just a good reminder I guess. Got a torch and batteries (which may or may not hold a charge still cos they're old) and some candles and matches and water sterilisation tablets. Enough to help if pooled with other people I guess.
Oh, and a can of catfood.
Presuming the cats stick aroud - basically in an earthquake I'm going to throw the little boogers outside and come back to find them later!!
Of course, all of this earthquake preparation is best done when you're dripping wet out of the bath and wearing nothing but a bath towel!
Also, cos this really has stunned me I'm dealing with it by rambling randomly at you all. Poor you.
I did realise that one of my anxieties about earthquakes is gone now - it's not that I was scared of dying in an earthquake, it was actually that I was scared of surviving and having to try and cope in the traumatic aftermath. You know, finding food etc etc. But one of my big ones was that when I was really really overweight I was worried about coping physically AND I was worried about clothes. Because earthquakes always seem to happen in the middle of the night when you're wearing your pajamas. And if I had to run out of the house in the middle of the night wearing nothing but my raggedy nighty, I just KNEW that I would spend the next six weeks wearing nothing but a blanket cos there was no way any of the aid services would have clothes to fit me.
I know, it's a silly anxiety, but it was a very deep one.
But now I'm a more normal size, I know the chances are that I'll find something to fit from among whatever is donated to the aid services - presuming I can't get back into my own house. I might have to stick over and pinch something from the man pile of clothes, but I'll find something. And won't end up wearing a sheet for the next six weeks.
In other news, today Linda and I wet for a walk and we must have walked at least 15-17 km in 3hrs 20 mins - this included hills and we think we did BLOODY WELL! Needless to say I'm very tired now, hence the bath.
If we have an earthquake now, I'm dressed, but I'm dressed oddly (My mother's cardigan - too big; my bright pink 'feeling fruity' night shirt that I have, on ocassion, mowed the lawns in - too big; my old stripey yoga pants - yes, also too big; stinky thermal socks that I just walked 15km in.) On the upside, I am wearing my good bra - you can never go wrong in a disaster as long as you're wearing your good bra!!
I need to go to town tomorrow and buy innersoles for my gym shoes. I didn't want to buy new gymshoes before the half marathon and run the risk of them rubbing blisters because they weren't broken in - but I find that, although my current gymmies are comfortable, after 15 km they do rub a bit on the balls of my feet because the padding there is worn. So I'm going to find some inner soles to see if that helps.
Also, I want sesame egg tofu, but I'm thinking it would be cheaper for me to make that than to buy it from the food stall in the mall.
