It's October. That was fast.
I made homemade cream of mushroom soup last night for the first time! And totally winged it, Meres'-Dad style (he doesn't believe in recipes.) It turned out quite well, but like most of my sauces/soups ended up a little heavy on the salt. Very tasty with toasted ciabatta dipped in, though.
The election is soon, and I worry stupidity will reign, if only because of the split on the left. Though, if the Conservatives win a minority we might see something interesting.
I am so. TIRED. of the Harper Conservatives' nonsense about niqabs and revocation of citizenship for terrorists etc. etc. The Islamophobia they promote (and that a worrying number seem to espouse) is maddening. It comes hand-in-hand with other xenophobia and anti-immigrant nonsense and I am sick of it.
The country is changing. It has changed, will change, and SHOULD CONTINUE TO FUCKING CHANGE. Why is that threatening? Islamist hardliners will be about as successful at turning this country into a Sharia state as the Christian Heritage Party's Dutch Reform yahoos will be at turning the Constitution into the Ten Commandments and turning all women back into housewives (i.e. not fucking happening). I'd have to be an idiot to think that the Canada I live in now is the same as my parents', my grandparents', and their grandparent's parents, whose dirt-farming, hard-drinking, Papist ways surely rustled the jimmies of those Anglo Upper Canadians.
Don't even get me started on the amount of shit these same people flip the First Nations. Augh.
In conclusion: the immigrants may "refuse to assimilate" (fuck you, I'll assimilate your face), but their children will be Canadian. Because they will create Canada. For fuck's sake the CBC has broadcast hockey games in Punjabi for years now. That's not scary, that's awesome.
In other news, my cat has lost his damn mind. Were does he get the energy to gallop around for half an hour meowing at nothing? And why is he such a bitey jerk? Is he getting messages from the mother ship or something?
