What's going on out in this corner of the internet? How's life? Where have we been?

Oh hey, hi!

It's been a little quiet. I think a lot of people are over on Dreamwidth and Tumblr a fair bit. I cross-post to Dreamwidth, but I have a love-hate relationship with Tumblr, so I'm dragging my feet on getting an account and cross-posting.

Let's see, what's happened in the past 3 years? My sister got married (big wedding, total bitch to plan) and also presented me with a niece, now almost 16 months old. Cute, but high maintenance. I spent two weeks in Varadero, Cuba last October and it was bliss. Oh, and my horrible noisy neighbour got foreclosed on and had to move out. SCORE! I wanted to find out which bank foreclosed on his noisy inconsiderate ass so I could move my business over to them, but I never actually got around to it. And my great-aunt died. She was 107 and had dementia, so it was sad, but not as sad as it could have been if she'd been younger and still had all her marbles. Which sounds bitchy and heartless, but i think there comes a point where you have to look at quality of life, and hers was not good those last few years before she died. And she left me a BEAUTIFUL diamond ring that I wear religiously.

Oh, and my apartment got broken into just before Christmas last year, and the thief took my laptop, but didn't realize the ring was also there, in its hiding spot. It was a smash-and-grab, he brought a tire iron or a crowbar or something, smashed the glass door onto my patio, and just bypassed my security bar altogether. Scary, and I also had to go and buy a new laptop (reimbursed by my homeowner's insurance, thank God) 2 days before Christmas Eve, which meant elbowing my way through all the crowds. I think that's it.

My current fannish obsession is "The Americans", an FX series that's seriously the best show nobody's watching. It's set in Washington, DC in 1981 and is about a married pair of travel agents who are actually deep cover spies for the Soviet Union. As in, they're married because they were put together back in Russia when they were in their early 20s and in spy school, and have lived in America ever since. And have 2 kids (probably conceived with a general theme of "lie back and think of Mother Russia") who have no idea their parents aren't American. And then they start to develop actual feelings for each other at long last, and everything goes to hell. Which makes it sound like a sappy love story, but it"s not, it's an awesome thriller spy caper show with a love element to it. You should totally check out the first season. I think it's on Netflix.

And in books, I'm obsessed with Naomi Novik's Temeraire series (the Napoleonic Wars with added dragons. So cool!) and Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series (urban fantasy / police procedurals about a young man of colour who is simultaneously a newly-minted cop in London and also an apprentice wizard. Some kick-ass female characters, too).

Ha that feels like everyone’s relationship with Tumblr. I feel like it’s a big step back for fandom - it’s driven by content-creation, not discussion, and the platform feels so counter-intuitive. I miss the glory days of LJ.

Right? How can you do exactly what I'm doing right now, interjecting in a comment thread?! That's the best bit!

(Hiiiii!)

Hi! Hi!

I'm with Nos re: Tumblr. It's so... impersonal seeming. I suppose you can have sharings back and forth, tagging and such, but where's the epic comment trains where everyone can follow along easily and join in a conversation? The comment train was/is the best thing about the LJ-esque blogging platforms!

And wow, 107 is a ripe old age! There have never been any centerarians in my family, that is something.

Boooo to the apartment thief! May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their netherbits.

That show sounds cool... but Temeraire! I love it of old. So magical, and alternative histories with dragons is basically the best and NN should write about all the ages of the world. I have heard of Rivers of London! (I think via a fic corssover? LOL.) I should check it out, I need new books (like a hole in the head, but yay, new books!)

Life is good and boring on my end. I... did the CN Tower Edgewalk last year, wherein you dangle off it like a fool and it's awesome? I went to Las Vegas with my friends, turned 30, went to Osheaga, works ridiculous hours at my job, bought antiques, pet my cat. Thrills!
