Out of the mouths of babes

My parents were travelling with my nieces and nephew yesterday. Alice is seven, Zachary is five, and Ellie is three. Two years ago my sister and her husband moved themselves and the kids from Yonkers to northwestern Virginia for reasons that have not been adequately explained.

But here's the scene:

ABBA playing in the stereo, Grammy and Alice singing along to S.O.S.

Zach: What's this song about anyway?

Grammy: It's about a girl who lost her boyfriend. She wants her boyfriend back.

Ellie: Oh, I want my girlfriend back, too.

Zach: You're a girl. You can't have a girlfriend. You have to have a boyfriend.

Alice: Well, in New York she could have a girlfriend, but not in Virginia.
