I know that there are many young men and women from Hughes Springs that have bravely joined the armed forces and have fought in wars that mean very little to the American public to help liberate other countries. This is not an entry about whether the wars are valid for any reason. To make myself perfectly clear ANY comments about how the wars are wrong or putting down our elected administration for these wars will be automatically deleted. This entry is about the memory of someone I was acquainted with.
Sam Castle, a brave young man, fast as lightning and a wonderful all around person has been killed in Iraq. He was two years younger than me and my brothers knew him pretty well. I'm sure he had high hopes and dreams of a good long life after the military, but knew in his heart he needed to help. He was killed doing what his country asked him to do. They asked him to help protect another country--another culture that is largely anti-American. They asked him to put his own life on the line to maybe the lives of millions would be spared. He did. I'm sure he did it with pride in his heart knowing that maybe he made a difference.
So, the war has touched the hearts of Hughes Springs. Many won't realize what a sacrifice Sam made, many may not even know him, but Hughes Springs is less one shining star today. No one can tell me that his life was worthless and that his dying on serves to remind us where we should be fighting wars. It's about humanity. It's about love. It's about freedom.
