Life is good

It's official. Summer is my favorite season. I think I've known this. We have a BBQ at our house on the 4th every year. I love this holiday. It's the only holiday the entire extended family gets together under one roof. Yep, all the in-laws from every side come over. I'm talking my parents, my husband's parents, my sister-in-law's parents, my other sister-in-law. Everybody and their mama and Uncle Bob too. We swim, we cook, we eat.

I'm usually exhausted by the time it's over, but I promise you I wouldn't change it for the world. I love this day.

Yesterday my summer officially started. The pool was open for business and I had a house full of kids. Three were mine, one was my niece, and then we had some more in and out that I consider part mine anyway. What I hadn't managed to do yet was get the top edges of the pool scrubbed. They did it for me! And what normally takes me three evenings to do, five got it done in less than five minutes.

I smeared on sun block, they had corndogs at the patio tables, I did laundry, folded clothes, and smeared more sun block on them. I cooked dinner. We ate. A wonderful breeze was blowing through by evening so we got in a little pitching practice.

By the time I crawled in bed, I was worn out beyond belief. But it was one of those happy worn out feelings. A job well done. We took a day and made it noteworthy. We made one of those days that will be here with us forever.

We have a window unit in our living room because our central unit has trouble making it work in there. Yesterday my son came inside red as a beet and went over to stand in front of the air-conditioner. It reminded me of elementary. We had window units in our classrooms and when we came in from recess (ya know, back when they gave the kids more than one recess a day and didn't accuse the parents of making them fat, even though they take away all the recesses now and then give them three hours worth of homework every night)-oh sorry. Anyway, we always stood in front of the unit, thinking we'd maybe reached heaven, for a short time. And when they mowed, the scent of the fresh cut grass would come through mixing with the smell of cold, clean air.

So, I've been thinking about what summer is to me. Ball games for sure. Sunflower seeds, lemonade, family fishing trips that amount to nothing but a lot of laughs, baby back ribs, corn on the cob, fresh from the garden veggies, cotton wood. Summer is real. It's too hot to cake on layer after layer of make-up, too hot to bury yourself in a mountain of clothes. Summer says, here I am all in true form. Let's have some fun and make some memories.

After all, life is only as good as you make it.
