(no subject)

I spent this weekend watching a lot of television. I have now finished season 2 of Lost and season 3 of NCIS (8 episodes!). I'm not going to get into how I feel about either show, as discussion on Lost has been done so completely that I'd have nothing to add, and I don't know too many of my flist that would be interested in discussing NCIS. I do have an NCIS question from something that was brought up in the finale if anyone could help me, though.

Okay, reading the CBS website, it says that Gibbs was a member of NCIS for 19 years. I can buy that, which means he joined in 1987 or thereabouts. According to Hiatus, his daughter was born in 1984 (and died in 1991). Okay, still no problem. These dates seem further supported by the fact that Gibbs not only has "NIS" t-shirts for himself, but also ones that fit a child, as seen in Honor Code.

So, with that being said, how can they state that Gibbs didn't join NCIS until August of 1991? First of all, that negates the 19 years of service thing, and second of all, what about the shirt? As the NIS became NCIS in 1992, I don't see where else he could have gotten NIS child-sized shirts other than left over after his daughter's death, as he'd have no reason to otherwise have obtained any (as I would think getting a child sized shirt within a year after his daughter's death would be too painful, plus, he would only be a probie, so why would he want to bother getting one?), and I doubt NCIS still has some hanging around after all of this time.)

I know this show isn't great with continuity, and I love it otherwise, but this is really bothering me. *sigh* I suppose I should just accept it. (However, if any of you have any brilliant ideas that can fix this continuity/timeline problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.)
