So, the other day I was complaining to a (non-Swat) friend of mine that the trees here don't have nametags on them, and she said that I should start a blog about life post-graduation called "Where the Trees Have No Name." While I may yet take her up on this offer, I am pleased to report that at least 3 of the trees in New York do have names. And their names are, apparently, Pete, Melissa, and Patrick.
A bit of explanation: I was walking down 9th Street in Brooklyn today and I noticed a piece of paper attached to one of the trees along the side of the road. I assumed it probably said something about curbing dogs, or about no parking on alternate Tuesdays, or YARD SALE!!!!!111. But upon a closer look, I discovered that it was a nametag, which said something along the lines of "Hi, my name is Pete and I'm a Brooklyn tree," followed by a poem. Subsequent trees on the block were revealed to be Melissa and Patrick. A woman noticed me smiling ridiculously at the trees and so we started a conversation about them, too. So I am pleased to report that at least a chosen few trees here, do, in fact, have names, and they appear to be friendly, or at least friendliness-inducing.
