Name: Gabriel Davis Wise
Hometown: Seattle, WA
Field: Neurosurgery
Strengths: Good bedside manner. Grew up around the medical field because of his parents, so he's always felt at home at Mercy West. Good attention to detail. Focused, determined, driven.
Weaknesses: Confrontational. Still blames himself for his parents' deaths. Beats himself up when he loses a patient, and sometimes drinks his problems away.
Personal History: Gabriel was just about destined for the medical field from birth. His parents were both surgeon, his father a neurosurgeon and his mother a cardiothoracic surgeon. This meant that he didn't have quite the normal childhood that most kids his age did. His parents were not often at home, and when he did see them, it was at the hospital. When babysitters were hard to come by, Gabe joined them at the hospital, and followed at their heels, or was watched by whatever nurse or doctor could keep an eye on him. The hospital became his second home. As a young child, he enjoyed seeing his parents work and admired them greatly, but as he grew older, he began to resent them for being too busy for him. When he was only thirteen, however, everything changed. Late one snowy night after a long day at work, his parents were driving home, with Gabriel asleep in the back seat. Their car hit a hidden patch of ice and his father lost control of the steering. the car spun out of control, flipped four times, before coming to stop upside-down on the side of the street. Although all were wearing their seatbelts, only Gabe survived. His father died instantly, and his mother bled out moments later before the ambulance arrived. To this day, Gabriel still blames himself for their deaths and for not being able to help them, even though there was nothing he could have done. The next week, he had decided he was going to become a doctor and dedicate his life to the memory of his parents. In each patient, he sees his parents' faces, and even though he saves lives all the time, he still feels guilty for the ones he loses, no matter whether or not he could have saved them. Its not quite as bad as it was when he first stared out, but sometimes, he still takes failed surgeries very personally. Although not an alcoholic, he is known to sometimes drink his problems away when he's lost a patient.
Gabriel lived with his grandparents until he was old enough to be on his own. He worked his way through medical school, focusing hard on his studies. Initially, he did not want to intern at Mercy West, since his parents had worked there, but it made sense. His late parents' influence helped him get into the medical program. He focused on neurosurgery, like his father, and was skilled enough that he eventually became an attending physician in that field.
Personality: Gabriel is outwardly strong and intense when he's hard at work on a surgery, but he also has a warmer, more sensitive side to him as well. He gets along rather well with the female nurses and doctors, able to charm them in a soft manner that is not insincere or fake. It helps him when he needs them on his side, or hopes to coax them into helping, but he doesn't necessarily over-abuse the power. He has a dry sense of humor when he's in a good mood. He also has a good bedside manner with his patients, but sometimes, he has trouble giving them bad news, because of the loss of his parents. He has a tendency to become overprotective of his patients sometimes, and can become confrontational if another attending or resident challenges his decision on a patient case.
His work doesn't leave much time for a social life, but he is known to socialize with some of his colleagues. He enjoys meeting people outside his field, however, these relationships do not tend to last. Mainly because of his work and some of his personal issues, Gabriel has been unable to date any one woman for an extended period of time.
Appearance: At 5'11, Gabriel is fairly tall, and while not overly-muscular, he is lean and well-built. He has dark brown hair that tends towards curls and waves, and eyes that can often be intense. When he truly smiles, however, it crinkles the sides of his eyes and brings little dimples to his cheeks. Although he is attractive, he does not care much about his appearance.
