Atlantis Hot Zone
Hot Zone, another one of my favorite eps from season 1 *g*
The episode starts with Radek and Rodney playing "prime not prime" with Ford as they (and a bunch of other scientists) explore parts of the city that were flooded by the storm. This is remarkable because Ford gets the answer wrong EVERY TIME LOL and Radek and Rodney tease him mercilessly about it.
When the work is done, they're all ready to head back...whoopsie, two scientists are missing :O Rodney radios the two, Johnson and Wagner and asks them for their position, they scream over the radio that they need back-up. The whole team runs to the rescue, only to find Wagner dead on the floor and Johnson cowering nearby.
Johnson says: "They got him" then goes completely bonkers and dies Rodney radios for a medical team and when Carson answers, Rodney tells him it's too late. He requests a containment team. Rodney thinks Wagner and Johnson were exposed to something, "People don't just see things and drop dead"
One guy named Peterson doesn't want to listen to Rodney, he's scared that if they stay around, the WILL catch whatever killed Johnson and Wagner, he wants to go back but Rodney says no, there's no way to know if they will spread whatever it is to the rest of the city. He has an idea and they all set off to search the area where Johnson and Wagner were found.
Oooh, we get to see Teyla teaching John how to stick fight heheh it's cute 'cause first she smacks his ass, then she kicks it hehehe
Weir decides to put the city into self-regulated quaranteen after Peter reminds her that the ancients died of a plague and Rodney and the others might have run across it. So everyone is confined where they are until the all clear has been given. This means that John is stuck in the gym with a sweaty Tyla, and he's ticked! LOL He wants to be in the control room to help, Weir won't let him out, she says she and Bates can handle it (Bates is head of base security)
Rodney and Ford enter what looks like an ancient lab. Lights are flickering and Rodney finds a broken tube thingy and says, "This is not good."
Rodney determines that they've found an ancient viral lab. While he's telling to Weir on the radio, Dumais goes nuts and dies :O While she's freaking out, Peterson, the guy that wanted to go back, sees a shadow thingy fly at him and then disappear...he's more than a little freaked and slips out of the lab while everyone's distracted.
Ford realizes Peterson is gone and reports to Weir who is tracking Peterson on the life-signs detector in th control room. They lock the doors but Peterson knows how to get past the locks. He's headed toward the city
and there's no way to stop him.
Weir tries to talk some sense into Peterson over the comms but he's not listening.
In the meantime, Beckett and the medical team have made it to the scientists. They've set up an autopsy room and begun examining the bodies. Rodney's a little cranky LOL but then we notice something's wrong with him, he seems to be seeing something that's not there. He hides this fact and gets back to work trying to find a cure. But Radek notices something is up but doesn't say anything...
John demands to be let out in order to stop Peterson from reaching the populated areas of Atlantis. Weir says no, John says tough and attempts to leave the gym, Weir has Peter seal it :O John orders Bates to unlock the gym and a real pissing match ensues. It ends with Bates going against Weir's orders and following John's, he unlocks the gym and John and Teyla leave to put on hazmat gear.
The pathologist (Dr. Biro) discovers that the first two victims died of a ruptured sacular brain anyurism. which isn't that rare but it happened in exactly the same place in each of them, right above the visual cortex.
Teyla chastizes John for undermining Weir's authority. They're all geared up and leave to head off Peterson.
Meantime, Peterson is getting worse, he's seeing things again and is in a total panic.
Rodney finds mention of the virus in the ancient computer in the lab, while he and Carson are talking, he sees a shadowy creature coming for him and this time can't hide his reaction...He reluctantly admits that
he's been seeing things for about an hour. Hayes, another scientist, has been having the same symptoms for about the same time.
Radek has been going over the timeline, Johnson and Wagner started off on their own and then ran into Dumais and infected her an hour later, she then came in contact with...you guessed it, Rodney and Hayes...looks like they're next to die! :O
John and Tely find Peterson. He says he's not going back, Teyla and John both have guns pointed at him, it seems he doesn't have much of a choice...Peterson makes a break for a nearby transporter. John yells at
him to stop but is forced to fire on him, hitting him but not before Peterson activates the transporter. Peterson arrives in the mess hall and collapses.
Alarms begin sounding and doors start slamming, Atlantis has detected the viral threat and puts the city into lockdown. Grodin postulates that the city didn't go into quaranteen mode until now because the sensors in the part of the city where the outbreak occured were damaged by the storm, it took Peterson reaching the mess hall for Atlantis to recognize the threat.
John and Teyla are free to move about because they have hazmat suits on and the city recognizes that they are protected :D cool, huh?
John and Weir get in another arguement. John asks if the transporters are all off-line, Weir says yes, John says sarcastically, "Gee, I wish we'd thought of that" Weir goes off on him, they did think of that, they
had cut power to the section Peterson was in but had to power it back up to let John get through...woops :O She orders them back to the city, to wait in Carson's lab for further instructions.
Dr. Biro has finshed the autopsy on Dumais, she died of the exact same thing in the exact same place, surprise hehe Rodney is wondering why all the visions have been similar, if it was a normal anyerism, they would
experience different visual anomylies depending on the person. While they're theorizing, Hayes goes nuts and dies :O
Everyone turns to Rodney expectantly, horrified knowing that he's next.
He composes himself and gives his final instructions. He tells the others that he has a sister, they aren't close, he doesn't even know how to get in touch with her but she's the only family he has and he wants
them to tell her what happened...actually he wants them to tell her he died saving a bunch of kids LOL
He gets Radek's name right for the first time! He tells Radek that he has some notes on how to use the gate to charge a dummy zpm...some other stuff on conserving power etc...when he's finished he waits to die...and waits..."okay, I should be dead now" He's pretty ecstatic about still being alive, "I'm still here!" until Radek says, "No offence but...why?" LOL Rodney doesn't care why.
Rodney's on to something, incubation to completion is exactly 6 hours, the visions are identical, and the location of the anyerism is the same soooo....it must be.....a nanovirus caused by nanobots! One manufactured to kill humans, Rodney lived because, thanks to Beckett, he has the ancient gene.
Rodney doesn't think the virus was created by the wraith, he says the wraith don't want to scare them and then kill them, they want to eat them...the point is moot as Ford reminds him there are still other people,
himself included that are facing a time bomb in their heads...Ford and the others have a little under an hour :O
John and Telya head to the mess hall to check on the peeps there since they are the only ones who can move through the quaranteened areas.
While they're there Rodney sends John to his lab where he has an EM pulse thing. They shut down all the electronic gear all over the city, and EM pulse won't damage ancient stuff. They'll know it worked if the city
lifts the quaranteen and all the doors open.
John pushes the button and they wait...and wait...it didn't work. It just wasn't strong enough to kill the little buggers.
The people in the mess hall start having visions and panic, causing Teyla's suit to get ripped :O
John has an idea :D He wants to detonate a naquadah reactor over the city, the EM pulse from that should be big enough to kill all the nanobots. Weir says no, it's too dangerous, Rodney convinces her that this is the only way.
So, John takes a jumper up. It's dangerous, the shockwave may damage the puddle jumper, Rodney tells him he'll have 30 seconds to get clear. It's a rough ride but John makes it ok :D
Rodney and Radek do a geek high five LOL and Ford gives Rodney a big hug Awwww! ;D
Epilogue:
Weir chews John out royally for going against her orders.
Rodney and Carson pop in to say that they've been studying the deactivated nanobots. They've determined that it definately wasn't the wraith that created the virus, they don't know who it was but they really hope that they're not still around!
Noteworthy:
The ATA gene therapy only works in 48 or so percent of people...It didn't take with Radek :(
Ford, up until this ep, hasn't had the gene therapy. We don't know for sure if he gets it after this ep...
4 more scientists dead in this ep, that makes 6 dead scientists in the last two eps alone :O Dang! hehehe
Best lines:
Ford, after he gets sick of the scientits teasing him: "This is some sort of payback for guys like me beating up guys like you in high school, right?"
Teyla, while she has John in her grips: "You have not been practicing, if this had been a real fight..."
John: "If this had been a real fight, I would have shot you by now."
Ford, freaking out a bit when he realizes he has less than an hour to live, Carson tells him to stay calm: "Calm? You just told me I have a million tiny robots running through my veins who's only purpose is to terrorize and kill me! You stay calm!"
