The first video is sad enough...the second shows how effin incompetent BP and Obama are...
Perhaps money can be raised to help folks keep their pets. I'm going to give the shelter a call tomorrow and see if some organization hasn't already offered to provide food.
http://hotair.com/greenroom/archives/2010/06/10/oilspill-unemployed-fishermen-forced-to-give-up-their-pets/ While the details may be surfacing in the Rolling Stone report for the first time for some people, the narrative itself is in line with the assumptions from the last couple of weeks about what led to the Deepwater Horizon blowout, the spill, and the bungled response.
This is more interesting for Rolling Stone’s comfort in damning the Obama administration and flat-out rejecting the Captain Kickass/Commander Passbuck spin coming from the White House. Not only did they know all about the problems at MMS, none of them had much interest in fixing it. When disaster struck, they spent more time trying to silence scientists at NOAA about the extent of the spill than they did in getting BP to act. It’s as if they won the election and decided mainly to rest on their laurel. It speaks to a profound disinterest in doing the jobs for which they got elected, and a complete lack of leadership from the beginning of the spill and lasting until the moment Rolling Stone published their analysis today.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/111965 Oh my gosh! You’ve got to be kidding me:
Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help.
It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.
The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup: “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks,’” said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.
Now, almost seven weeks later, as the oil spewing from the battered well spreads across the Gulf and soils pristine beaches and coastline, BP and our government have reconsidered.
Federal law has also hampered the assistance. The Jones Act, the maritime law that requires all goods be carried in U.S. waters by U.S.-flagged ships, has prevented Dutch ships with spill-fighting equipment from entering U.S. coastal areas.
“What’s wrong with accepting outside help?” Visser asked. “If there’s a country that’s experienced with building dikes and managing water, it’s the Netherlands.”
I know that hindsight is 20/20, but this is ridiculous. They had what we needed and we turned them down. We already know that the Obama administration was briefed from day one on how difficult this would be and how long it might last, and now we know that armed with that information they (and BP) turned down help from people with the equipment to keep this at bay. And now, almost 2 months later we decide to take them up on their offer. We have freaking geniuses running the show.
Obama can declare a national emergency over an over hyped flu but not this?!?!?
And finally, a most interesting blog from someone on the front lines.
http://birding.typepad.com/gulf/ I'm on a half dozen call lists for wildlife responder volunteer positions. For now, the folks on seen are only using local volunteers...it gives people a sense of purpose to help in their own backyards, especially when there is so much stunning buffoonery going on around them.
The Gulf of Mexico is more important than any presidency, any corporation, or any elected official's career. Edward James Olmos was on Anderson Cooper the other day and forgive me for paraphrasing what he said...
"He (Obama) should move the White House to the Gulf Coast until this was fixed. No more parties with Paul McCartney, etc. until this is taken care of." Amen.
