Camping Adventures

Aug 18, 2007 01:23

Well, this is going to be long, but here's the day to day journal I kept from my camping trip, taken straight from real paper!

WEEK ONE:

Sunday, July 29

8:00pm - Well, I'm at the lake now, all set up and everything, unfortunately it's cold out. Friday night I only got an hour and a half of sleep, and couldn't fall asleep last night. I think I passed out at about one in the morning, pretty late for practically not sleeping since Thursday.

Today we went into town, I got an awesome bright red bra and panty set at the bargain store for ten bucks, makes me happy cause the actual price tag was 28 bucks for the bra and 12 bucks for the panties. I also got three pairs of plaid panties. After that we went to Wal-mart and I got a bikini bottom that matches the top I have, and another bathing suit that's rather skanky. It looks like a bikini from the back, but is sort of a one piece from the front, and it's sparkly black.

Now I'm sitting in my tent freezing my butt off and watching Forest Gump on TV. Dad is chopping firewood and just snagged two ropes holding the tarp up with his axe and ripped out both grommets. Pretty funny that was, too many margaritas for him I think. I'm going to go make some hot chocolate and read my New Scientist magazine now!

12:30am - ...huh, seems that my cat is in love with a stalk of celery. She's now acting all happy and stoned; she was rubbing all over it and purring her brains out, as most cats do with catnip, only more so. Odd creature she is, very very odd.

Monday, July 30

7:40pm - I went swimming today, the lake is slightly more chilly than normal, but it's fine once you're in. It was very nice out today, and is only going to get nicer. Wednesday will be fun, we get to go to the Fish and Duck pub. They have the BEST chicken wings ever! Mmmm, that and boat rides are fun. Six more days 'till Arwen comes up here! It's going to be hard to make room in the tent. Some guy just parked in our campsite...people need to stop doing that, considering that's the second time today. Anyways, hamburgers are ready!

Tuesday, July 31

7:40pm - Today we went to the cliffs, and an assorted beach on the lake with everyone and their boats. I think they called it a "flotilla" or something like that. Essentially tie all the boats together and swim and whatnot. We all packed a lunch and stayed out all afternoon. All the guys who went off the cliff were too wussy to go off the top one, it took them forever to jump off. It was funny, cause I just flew off with no hesitation (it's only about nine meters, and I'm used to ten). It was fun. After that we sat around at the beach around the corner from the cliffs for a while (and got annoyed by horse flies), and then I got to tube home. It was a pretty mild tube ride, but my muscles hurt. I'm very out of shape. I might go up to the other trailer park tonight, and see if any of my other friends are up here.

Wednesday, August 1

9:20pm - I hurt from tubing still, I really need to get in shape it seems. So, tonight we went to the pub, and I finally got those delicious chicken wings I've been craving all week. They were so gooey and delicious. The boat ride was fun too, and amusing. Mom's skirt flew up as we started to go cause she forgot to hold it down, so that amused everyone, and the ladies in the other boat all lifted their tops as the boat went under the wing of the Mars water bomber. It's crazy to think that this week's almost over, and two weeks after I get back I have to go back to school. Not cool. I'm a little nervous, new school and all. Merp. In other news, my nipples are still slightly unhappy with me for jumping off those cliffs...and the zipper for my tent is broken, and extremely finicky. Annoyances, annoyances!

WEEK TWO:

Sunday, August 5

<1>9:53am - Yesterday was fun, mom went tubing on the three person tube, then we switched up and I went on. Then I went again with the boys. It was awesome, and we got some pretty good air. Though it was funnier when dad and his friends went. They flipped the thing a few times. Three big guys on a tube, very funny to watch. Dad hurt his rib though, and I got a massive bruise on my hip. Later I went tubing again on the single tubes, three of us went at a time. I never fell off, and stayed on the small red tube that everyone else flew off of. We went over some pretty huge waves doing doughnuts, it was great fun.

Anyways, this morning dad phoned mom to tell her that Arwen wasn't coming up because she lost her job, and has no money. I offered to pay, but she wanted to stay home to look for another job. I am royally miffed about that, and very sad.

Tuesday, August 7

10:38am - Yesterday: I did some more tubing. My abs hurt. Still haven't fallen off. Went to the rope swing too, boys are wussy. I also got to play with the super-ultra-adorable long haired chihuahua across from us. Too cute. Ian (one of dad's friends) invented "dock golf". He tied a golf ball with a hole drilled in it to a fishing line on a fishing rod, and made a tee holder out of an old toilet mat of some sort, made out of that foamy stuff that is layed under carpeting. It actually worked, and was really damn funny. They were trying to shoot the ball into a tube they anchored out in the lake. All night Ian was drunkenly going off on how he's going to market this product, and make a web site and stuff. Very amusing.

Today: I just woke up really depressed about Arwen not coming up. I contemplated finishing the third book I've read in the past four days. Stared at the roof of my tent instead. Realized I'll probably be holding a grudge against Arwen for a while...which is bad, because this is the only time in the recollection of my mind I've ever been willing to hold a grudge. Then I started thinking of other stuff that got me even more depressed feeling. Ungh. I'm going to go read more.

12:50am - A large group of us went for a hike up to Ward Lake today. We got ice cream afterwards, then I played with Sapphira (the super-ultra-adorable long haired chihuahua) so CUTE! It's like a little kitty-fox! It even smells like a kitty when it's wet! *squeeks*. My kitty is jealous cause I've been spending more time with the "dog" than her, poor beast. Still mildly upset, contemplating sleep. It was cold out today. I miss people. Blah.

Wednesday, Auguse 8

12:20pm - I forgot to mention that last night I played giant-sized Jenga with blocks of wood (about 3" x 6" stacked in fours), that will at one point end up having marshmallows roasted over them. It was a fun and simple game where the small children could risk death. At one point when I was playing it with a nine year old kid, the Jenga pile was taller than he was. It falls hard too, if you're taking a piece from the bottom of the pile, you really have to watch that it doesn't fall flat on your head and give you a nice bump. Fun stuff, who knew that you could turn Jenga into a dangerous game? (actually...probably a lot of people).

Today is sunnier than yesterday, which is good 'cause it was gross out. Guh, three weeks 'till school starts.

Thursday, August 8

4:00pm - It's pouring out today. It was alright this morning, but no longer. It's been thundering on and off too. I went tubing this morning behind a crazy sea-doo boat thing. It's insanely fast, and can go from 0 to 60 in like...two seconds, and it turns SO sharp. It was way different tubing behind it than an actual boat. There's a lot of spray, so you can't see anything, and there's no wake. The boat was only going about 25mph, but the tube was whipping at least twice that, the tube was practically off the water. My first fall was fine, but my second on what must've been a 50mph whip was less good. I think I may have given myself a mild concussion. I've been rather nauseous for the past while, and my neck is stiffening up. Tomorrow is going to hurt...my poor head. I think I'll stink to tubing behind normal boats. I think I get to go out for chinese food tonight, yay!

Friday, August 10

11:05am - So, all you can eat Chinese food at The Golden Dragon is AWESOME! They have all you can eat PIE! In other news, my neck is stiff, and I have just over one week left. I want to see people. Oh, speaking of, happy birthday Don! It stinks that I have to keep missing it. I want breakfast...and nicer weather preferably. This last week is going to be lame, everyone leaves tomorrow, so there's going to be no one I know. Blah. Theres a squirrel trying to climb my tent....

WEEK THREE:

Saturday, August 11

1:22pm - Well, everyone is gone, and we're onto the final stretch of out holiday. Colten, Kally, and family came in for this week. My coffee tastes like campfire smoke. Oh! We have a boat for the next three days. "Big Tugger", the slightly bigger, slightly more improved, slightly less leaky "Little Tugger", the tin can. We're going to go cruise the lake today, I might get dad to take me tubing. I should get dressed. (Huh, six pages...this is going to be fun to type up, and no one is even going to read it all). God teenage girls are annoying. Sometimes I'm glad I'm terribly antisocial.

6:30pm - The lake is way bigger than I thought. Dad went through a tank and a half of gas going around probably half the lake. Taylor Arm alone used up an entire tank (I think it was 18Km one way or something). Two Rivers (the good arm with all the rope swings, and cliffs and whatnot) was a lot shorter, and we didn't even go all the way around Sterling Arm (which is okay, cause it's the one we "live" on). I still feel motion sick. Blech.

Sunday, August 12

5:50pm - We went to Coombes today. I keep forgetting how much of a useless tourist trap it is. All of the stores sell variations of the exact same things; mostly sarongs and overpriced silver jewelry. Mind you, the caramel coated apples alone are worth going there for. So delicious! Five more days 'till I get to go home, and have an actual shower! Three weeks with no shower is even a little too much for me, I feel...dusty. Don't worry, I've been bathing in the lake, soap and all, but still, I could go for running water, and a good scrub. I bought Amanda her birthday present today, I hope she likes it. I still need to get Arwen something, but theres nothing here. Speaking of Arwen, seems I still can't hold grudges at all, but that's a good thing! I just want to see people. Though, I must say, the two weeks so far have gone by extremely fast. This week however now that "the party gang" has vacated, it's very quiet, and will probably go by really slow. No more of the 20 to 30 people sitting around a campfire with three guitars going with crappy sing-alongs. Very funny to watch. And Sapphira is gone too, I have no more super-ultra-adorable puppy to maul! Oh well, home soon.

Tuesday, August 14

11:20am - Oh god, I woke up at 6:30 this morning to go pee, and there was a golden lab squatting right in the middle of the road ready to take a crap, then PBLOOBPPD! Seeing a dog with diarrhea go to the bathroom was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. I think I may be scarred for life. In other news, yesterday was awesome and sunny. Dad took me tubing behind the Tugger. It was lame, and the tube we have is way too small. My butt dragged the entire way *rubs it*. We went to one of the rope swings too, the one that was cut down last year. It's fixed, but I never went off. It very lame doing all that stuff alone. So we went back to the beach.

Today dad and some other people went to climb Mount Aerosmith, and I have to look after Doug's boy, Alexander. It shouldn't be too bad though, he's around ten, and is rather self-sufficient. I basically just have to watch him if he goes swimming. Touch stuff. Lucky kid gets his own personal lifeguard!

6:30pm - Well, it's nice out again today, and babysitting was easy. I got to try wake boarding for the first time today! It was awesome. I got up first try (didn't stay up mind you...), I got up on the second try no problem too, and the third, and fourth, then my foot started cramping up, and my ankles were getting sore, so I sucked slightly more. Next time I need to work on turning the board so I'm not going sideways...but I can stay up sideways...heh. Apparently it takes most people at least six tries to get up, as I witnessed with the other guy who was trying after me. People were impressed, so was I actually. It was neat. Theres a squirrel running around outside my tent, so cute!

Wednesday, August 15

12:14am - I tried wake boarding again today, I got up and stayed up! Though, I couldn't go straight behind the boat, the apparently "easy" part. I had no problem going across the wake, but I couldn't do that the "easy" way either. I kept doing what they call "butter-slides" where you just flip the board around, so say your back foot becomes your front foot. It's the only way I could change the direction I was going, so I could cross the wake. Someone said that what I was doing was like going straight to grade six without doing grade two, and that they've never seen anyone do that before so soon. People keep bringing it up in discussion, it's rather amusing.

Before I went wake boarding, we took Tugger out for the last time before it's owner came to pick it up. We went to Fossli park, and walked around there. The river in there rose so much this winter, and the storm completely stripped all the moss off of the rocks, which is really sad, because it was so pretty in there, now it'll take 20 years for it to look like Fern Gully again. After our walk, we were on our way back and there was a Mars Bomber ready to take off, so we followed it. It went in circles for a while, and wasn't taking off, so we started to head back because we needed to get the boat back before Wayne came to get it. Just as we were leaving it started to come straight for us, and was taking off. It was so neat, and loud! I got a video of it with the camera as it took off.

Tonight we did another sing-along thing with a much smaller group. Just dad and his friend Sig that came up this week. Some random people showed up with a guitar and asked if they could join in. The chick who came with her guitar was really good, and she had a gorgeous voice. She sung us one of her own songs, and despite her extreme drunkenness, it was really pretty. I need to sleep. I'm going to hurt tomorrow from wake boarding.

Thursday, August 16

10:33am - Ungh, it went from 31 degrees out to cold and rainy, overnight. Though thunder is cool. But still...rain, blah! We'll be leaving tomorrow rather than Saturday because it's supposed to be gross out till about Tuesday or something. I can't wait to get home and see people, and shower! And the intertubes, oh how I miss you. I'll need to buy a laptop for next year, even if it's a used and crappy one. Though, at the same time, I don't want to leave. the rain sounds so nice, I don't think I'm going to leave my tent today. Though I did forget to charge my mp3 player yesterday, so I'll have to wait till that's done charging before I get music. Oh well. In other news, my cat beat up a dog yesterday night. It came running into our campsite sniffing everything, and decided to go sniff the cat, or run over her or something, so she frizzed right up and took a good swat at his face. It was funny. It's insane how much she's mellowed out, she was perfectly calm after that, not psycho for a week afterwards. Ooh, thunder!

8:15pm - We went to the Clam Bucket for late lunch/early dinner today. Their spinach and artichoke dip is absolutely amazing! And the half-order of salad is MASSIVE!!! Say, a moxies salad, only at least three times bigger, and the dill dressing, mmm, delicious. Before that we went down to the Mars Bomber base to check out the new mini-museum they've put in after the bombers were bought by a different company. It was quite neat. They had a big old helicopter in there, and the nose to the eighth Mars Bomber that was never finished. I love those planes, the sound so awesome. They were built for World War two, but there are only two of the seven left in the world, and they live here at Sproat Lake. The lake really wouldn't be the same without them. Other than that small adventure, I've stayed in my tent and napped all day.

Friday, August 17

7:30pm - HOME!

So now that I'm home, last night (Friday) I went straight over to Amanda's place after getting out of the truck after a three hour drive to go to her little birthday get together. There was frisbee, and movie watching, and a giant spider. It was very nice to see people.

Tonight I get to see more people! And I get to go up to UVic with Shannon and people sometime next week to get bus passes, textbooks, and find all my rooms. Should be exciting.
