Title: Rebirth
Author: mercury_rose
Rating: G
Summary: As she leaves her family home, Andromeda brings with her a handful of things.
Genre: Gen

Andromeda brings with her the way Bellatrix used to laugh, the way she still sometimes does when she is with her sisters, all energy and potential and that fearlessness only Bella has. Andromeda could never in a million years laugh like that, with all of Bella’s daring courageousness.

She takes Narcissa’s ribbon for her hair that was her favorite when she was six years old, and the image of Narcissa wearing it, beautiful and happy and lovely. Andromeda fingers the silky material now, running her finger down the thin line. She makes it into a bracelet as she walks, tying it around her wrist.

She brings with her a photograph of the three of them, taken just a year ago, so it feels recent enough to bring both pain and happiness. Andromeda loves - and hates - the way Narcissa’s chin rests comfortably on her shoulder and Bellatrix is taking her arm, as if they are all the same person.

She also takes a photograph of their parents, standing a distance away from their daughters with stern expressions adorning their faces. It is a reminder of how she will not be when she is a parent.

Andromeda searched three hours for Regulus’s favorite book of fairy tales, and eventually her persistence was rewarded. Although it is heavy, she carries it in her bag, to remind herself of her youngest, most innocent cousin and the stories he loves, filled with heroes and princesses and magic. She hopes that he will become a true hero one day.

Sirius’s toy Quaffle adorns the bottom of her bag. She wants to remember all the recklessness of childhood that Sirius embodies, as well as her other cousin himself.

She could not bring herself to leave behind her stash of letters; even though she is not a pack-rat in the slightest, Andromeda saved every single one she ever received. Most of them were from Ted or her cousins or Bella, in those last two years when Bella had not been at school with her, and although she thinks that those letters will bring her tremendous amounts of pain, she believes that she has to bring them. There is too much history stored there to be lost, forgotten, destroyed.

Andromeda brings her camera, a Christmas present three years ago from her parents. It reminds her of her past, but it also whispers to her that there is a future; she will be creating new memories soon.

For some reason, as she was walking through the sitting room on her way out the door, she took a candlestick holder with her, engraved with the Black crest. She isn’t sure whether it is a sign of triumph, that she is no longer a Black, or whether she is admitting to herself that she is and always will be.

Andromeda takes her poster of one of the pure-blood Wizarding bands she used to adore, just to remind herself of where she came from and who she used to be - a person that will be forever unreachable now, with what she is doing now.

Most of all, Andromeda Black takes with her the burning, intense, undeniable love she feels for Ted Tonks, which prompted this action in the first place. She never lets this leave her grasp.

All of these things, Andromeda thinks, will have to be enough.
