Dear Phoenix

...

Phoenix Smith spent a lot of time in her room, quietly scrolling away on the computer screen. She liked to teach herself new things, to find something hard to think about. Her homework went undone.

Her desk was cluttered with everything that might be expected of a teenage girl; a lamp, a sports drink, headphones, makeup, and birth control she always forgot to take (not that it was necessary yet anyway). There was a pile of dirty clothes in front of the closet, a radio in the corner, and Phoenix's bookshelf was filled with CDs and movies.

As far as Phoenix knew, her biggest concern in life was if Mr. Jonathan Boy-Next-Door two lockers down from her had any idea who she was. In this, she was mistaken.

Li Hart spent a lot of time in his room, quietly playing video games and wishing he were someone else. He liked to immerse himself in another world that had nothing to do with him, to pretend he was as cool as the characters he played. His homework went undone.

The floor of his room was cluttered with everything that might be expected of a teenage boy; dirty clothes stayed where they fell, half-finished energy drinks led from the hall to the console to the bed. Li's bookshelf was filled with games.

As far as Li knew, his biggest concern in life was that Phoenix (and any of his other friends, and girls in general) would never like him. In this, he was mistaken.

"Hey, Jake," Li said. Jacob was Li's best friend, but that wasn't saying too much. "How's the girlfriend?"

"Addy?" Jacob replied. "She's good. We're going to a movie tomorrow night, if she can convince her bitch mom to let her come." Li nodded sagely, trying to appear like he cared. Jacob and Adelaide had been dating for almost six months now, and they still acted... twitterpated. "You interested in anyone?"

"Still just Phoenix," murmured Li to his shoes. He knew Jacob would soon be making fun of him ruthlessly. He wondered what creative names he'd be called this time. Was it really so bad to like one girl?

"Well, she likes that kid Jonathan two lockers down from her," Jacob informed Li bluntly, purposefully tactless. He shrugged unconcernedly and headed down the hallway to carry Adelaide's bag for her, happily leaving Li to deal with his feelings by himself.

Dear Phoenix,
Jonathan was talking to me the other day, about you. He said he liked you, but he was too shy to tell you. He didn't ask me to tell you for him, but I figured I would anyway. Because he's a cool guy, and you're my friend and I know you like him. You should ask him out.
Lov Your friend, Li
