I am so amazingly cool you could store a side of meat in me for a month

Why is that every time I leave the salon with cute hair the weather's gone all rainy and windy? It's a conspiracy, I tell you! I'm like, "Yay, my hair looks good!" and the weather's all, "WELL WE CAN'T HAVE THAT CAN WE."

Forces of nature aside, I've been to VAIN for two haircuts and a trim now and I'm still really really digging it. It's actually a bit of a wrench to think that I've just discovered this great salon (after a few less successful ventures), and soon I'll have to leave it behind and go through the whole process of finding a salon that doesn't suck and/or make me varying degrees of uncomfortable all over again in a new city. Woe!

I like VAIN because it's very hip, but relaxed at the same time. There are certainly a lot of "alternative" hairstyles going in and out of the door, but no one there is going to give you attitude or make you feel inferior if that's not what you want. Whether you're lead singer in a punk band or an executive who goes to work in a suit every day, they're just there to give you a darn good haircut. Their website says We believe in diversity whether it’s edgy or not, and you know? I really appreciate that attitude. It's like, Look, I may not have blue hair at the moment, but I have before, I might again, and I don't need to prove anything to you.

*ahem* Let's cut that rant short.

In addition to not being edgier-than-thou, they're also not so hip that it's impossible to get an appointment. Their hours are great. They don't bullshit about expensive hair products (not that I've experienced, anyway). Oh, and does it get better than $15 haircut specials? Fifteen dollars! One five! A college student's best friend! Mind you, I'm still likely to get myself in trouble with all the awesome jewelry, makeup, bags, &c. &c. that they have for sale. Basically, I have a little bit of a crush on my hair salon. ♥

Sadly, my coffee experiment was a little less successful. I decided to try this very sleek-looking place, Motore Coffee, which I'd walked by a few times. Think Vespas and iMacs. Also, the baristas are always cute. The caramel latte was disappointing, though--not Starbucks/Tully's bland, but not nearly as strong and flavorful as I was expecting, given their European stylings. Also, it wasn't nearly hot enough (but this is a problem almost everywhere). Really, it was so mediocre that I almost have to think it was a fluke. The barista was having an off day. He was bedazzled by my awesome hair and good looks. Something like that. But at roughly three bucks a pop, I can't afford to give a lot of second chances, you know? I'll stick to the places where I can confidently rely on having my socks knocked off. Which, for the record are: 1) Trabant Chai Lounge (never tried the chai, but this is the place which made me go, "Holy crap, so this is how espresso is supposed taste"), 2) the University Bookstore café, 3) Café Allegro at the College Inn, and 4) Bean & Bagel (though this was the same day I got those horrendous stomach cramps, so I don't know, they might be poisoning customers).

Someday I will go to Italy and have genuine espresso (and ride on a scooter and say, "Ciao"). And then I may have to renounce all the above places; but, for now, mmm.

Wow, this entry is so deep. HAIR AND ESPRESSO, YOU GUYS. I WISH those were my biggest worries in life!

eat drink & be merry, being girly
