... Not all of you know just how rough a time I've had with acting. In high school I had directors and acting teachers tell me, essentially flat out, that I wasn't as good as the other kids and it wasn't worth my time to keep going. The message was "Acting is a craft-- and either you're magically great at it, or you suck."
Fast forward to now, when I've finally gotten up the guts to take Intermediate Acting. Now, the Claremont Colleges are not a BFA program, and our theatre department is not the best. But I still, still can't believe my acting prof said this to me:
"You're very smart. And you're very good."
He praised me for being hardworking and meticulous and thorough; he treated my intellect as a strength, rather than something to be subdued in favor of the intuition.
No matter what happens in this class, I can't help being moved that finally, after six years ... someone's saying to me what I always hoped they would.
