Princess Tutu thoughts as of episode 26

Once upon a timezone and past your bedtime, a cog jittered loose from its proper place and jounced along a series of tubes. It skittered and rolled until it came to the small glowing screen of a young lady, who did not notice it at first because beneath her twenty-six open windows, it simply resembled a pop-up ad.

"Eh-heh-heh-heh ..."

The young lady blinked.

"Uh ..."

She minimized YouTube, which contained the last episode of Princess Tutu, hoping that this would cause the strange and eerie noise to cease.

"Oh ho, Merky-chan--"

Merc whirled around, shrieking: "AIIIIEEEEEE--"

And blinked, as she caught sight of strangely familiar pop-eyes and hat feathers.

"... Hey," she said, suspiciously, "I know who you are."

The old man grinned.

Merc pointed an accusing finger. "Drosselmeyer!"

(She reflected in embarrassment that maybe watching the fansub as opposed to the dub had been a bad idea: the name came out more like duh-roh-sill-maaaaya.)

Drosselmeyer cackled, appearing pleased to be recognized, and did a brief jig on the ceiling of Merc's living room.

"So, Merky-chan, you think you will step into a story that has already begun, eh?"

Merc looked sulky.

"It's not like I've made a journal or anything. Or looked for icons. Or brainstormed usernames." She quickly minimized a Word document reading: mythic_prince, heartbreakboy, heartlesshero, protagonish.

"You think you can change his fate?" Drosselmeyer chuckled. "This story has no need for two Ahiru-chans."

Merc gave Drosselmeyer (now grinning from under the piano) an unimpressed glower.

"Maybe you're forgetting something, Dross," she said. "If I want to? I can change his fate. I'm an author, just like you."

A beat.

"Except I no longer write like a thirteen-year-old fangirl with an angst complex and an immense love of retcon."

Drosselmeyer looked vaguely discomfited.

"Yeah, that's right," Merc sniffed. "So maybe I will do it. I'll take Mytho somewhere you can't get at him!"

The old man began to chuckle, feathers quivering.

"Eh-heh-heh ... you forget, Merky-chan. The prince's fate is set. It's already been written into canon! And taking it AU ... that's a dangerous thing to do, isn't it? Very dangerous! So if you want Mytho, you'll have to follow along the path that has already been prepared for you."

Merc took a moment to contemplate Princess Tutu/Revolutionary Girl Utena crossovers. Then she grinned at Drosselmeyer in challenge.

"We'll just see about that."

(... I blame Becca and Gen.)
