I've written about this before, but sometimes, I get so tickled, I have to write about it again.
One of the things I love about living in the greater Chicagoland area is the diversity, which is reflected everywhere, espically on TV. For a girl who grew up in overwhelmingly white small towns, this is a never-ending source of fascination for me.
The most current thing to make me go "Man, this is so cool?" I'm currently watching a Spanish language television show where they're talking about Samurai. So, to unpack this a bit further, I, a non-Spanish speaking American, am watching a Spanish speaking show trying to explain a few facets of Japanese culture. And to bring this full circle, I have to admit the only words that I do understand are the Japanese ones that are popping up in the narration like "Samurai", "Geisha", "obi", and "kimono".
Edit: Oh! And now they're demonstrating Iaido! How awesome!
Edit 2: And now it just switched to a Heinekin commercial.
I'm not sure if I can truly make anyone understand just how weird this melding of cultures truly is for me, but for some context, most of the post-cartoon Saturday morning shows that I used to watch growing up had to do with either fishing, hunting, car maintence, Christianity, or the latest product that would make my life complete for six installments of $19.99. So this? This is very, very cool for me!
And now, I think I'm going to go try to find the channel that plays Bollywood videos, just to make my morning complete.
