I'm a pretty good way into my first DWP fic, further along than I expected to be at this point, actually. It took me a couple of days to come up with a first sentence that I liked but ,once I had that, the rest of the story began to flow quite nicely. Last night was my third night with the muses really clicking for me, (or do Prada muses 'clack' instead?) but today I have come to a creative stand-still. I totally have cold feet. I feel swamped with questions and doubts today and don't know if I should give my overwhelmed little brain a rest or push myself through the uncertainty. Here's what is going through my head...
I am having such a difficult time finding Andy's voice that she's reading almost like a background character in this story, when she should be up there in the spotlight with Miranda. This concerns me and I don't know how to fix it, except to keep writing and hope I get more comfortable with her.
As I get closer to writing the first sex scene in this story, I wonder if I have any business writing femslash. I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Personally, I'm okay with that for now. I do write to learn, after all. And while I'm writing this story for my own selfish enjoyment and education, I can't ignore the fact that others will be reading this eventually. I really don't want to come across as a complete idiot and disappoint the readers.
And speaking of readers, some of them work my nerves, honestly. It's ridiculous that I feel like I need to say this, but here I go... I am not a racist. I am not a sexist, or ageist, or anything else along those lines. I am human, and flawed by nature, but I pride myself on being as open-minded and accepting as possible. I try every single day to be a better person, to be a worthwhile presence in others' lives. If I choose not to write a character into any of my stories, it's because I do not know them, not because I have a problem with them. Will I make an effort to get to know all of the characters better in the future and include them in my stories? Absolutely! But, c'mon folks, I feel like I have only the most tenuous grasp on Miranda's voice right now and can barely hear Andy's at all. Miranda and Andy are THE pair in this genre and I have to get to know them better before I can start worrying about the rest.
That's all I really have to say for now. I hope my muses start clicking (clacking?) again soon. Wish me luck!
