Anthony is eleven when his father first comes to him, in the middle of the night. His father Hurts him, and Anthony doesn't understand. His father tells him that he feels hot, and good, and Anthony does understand that. He feels like he is burning on the inside, although his skin is cold and it is making him shiver.

His father comes to him again the next month, and again the next. Then every month turns to every week, and later every day. He keeps telling him that he feels so hot inside, and Anthony thinks he might be on fire. By the time he goes to high school he knows better. He is not on fire, he is fire.

He knows this is true, because people can see it in his eyes. The intensity of his gaze scares them, they tell him, and then they look away. Anthony knows it is not just the intensity of his eyes, but the burning gaze itself that hurts them. He decides not to look at them anymore, not directly. No one can know that he is Fire.

The first time that the Fire that is Anthony burns someone, it is a small boy. He is a freshman in Anthony's school and he is all alone, all the time. Anthony takes him to an abandoned field near the school and there he shows himself, reveals his True Nature. The boy begins crying when he looks into Anthony's eyes. Anthony doesn't care, just takes what he wants, lets the Fire consume the boy. When he is done the Fire roars, already hungry for more. Anthony leaves the boy in the field, after making sure the boy wouldn't tell anyone about the Fire. One second of direct eye contact had been enough to make sure of that.

What is once burned can never be fuel for a fire ever again, so Anthony does not go back to the boy. Instead he finds other little boys, but they are all just twigs and dry grass for the Fire that is Anthony. He knows what, or rather, who, he really wants, but it is the one thing that is Untouchable.

When he is nineteen, he moves out and goes to live with Ian. His father is mad, angrier than Anthony has ever seen him. He is not afraid anymore. For the first time in eight years, he looks his father straight in the eye, and lets his True Nature shine through. His father is quiet after that.

Anthony is both excited and scared to go live with Ian. The Fire roars, sometimes it grows so big that Anthony is afraid of setting everything on fire. Sometimes it nearly gets extinguished, and Anthony is afraid that he might die if that happens.

He knows why this is happening. Innocent Ian, with his big, blue eyes is the reason the Fire is so wild. Ian's eyes are like water, like ice, ready to drown him if he looks too long. Ian never questions why Anthony never looks at him directly, and Anthony thinks Ian might know about the Fire.

Anthony knows he should stay away from Ian, but he just can't help himself anymore, not now they share a house together. Anthony knows the encounter will kill him, for it will extinguish the Fire, and Anthony and the Fire are one, always burning, always hot.

One night, sooner than Anthony had expected, it happens. They have a fight, and Ian tells Anthony to look at him. Anthony can't restrain himself any longer, and looks straight into Ian's eyes that are truly made of Water. Ian takes a step back, startled by what he sees in Anthony's burning eyes. The Fire has now become Desire, and Anthony already knows how this will end.

Anthony knows he will have to conquer the one thing that can kill Fire, and then he can live forever. But how to defeat Water, if you are only Fire? Suddenly it is all so clear, and Anthony has the answer. He will consume the Water, just like he consumed and burned all those boys in the past years.

He takes Ian to his bedroom, easily restraining him. He is Fire after all, the most powerful of all things. It is all so clear now, once Anthony will Take the Water, nothing can Hurt him, ever again. He makes sure Ian is on his stomach; one look into those blue eyes would destroy him. When he Takes him Ian struggles, but Anthony is Fire and thus a thousand times stronger.

Ian cries, and Anthony stares in fascination at the wet tears staining the pillow. He mustn't touch them. His hands are around Ian throat when he Takes him, and Ian shakes and moves, like waves breaking on the coast. Eventually he stops, and Anthony knows that for the first time, Fire has conquered Water.

After he rolls Ian on his back, he is even more sure of this. Ian's eyes are open, but the blue in them is nearly gone. Tiny red veins crawl from the white of his eyes to take over that horrible blue, before ending in the black of his pupils. The red is the Fire that is now inside Ian, Anthony knows. The Fire was successful in taking over the blue Water.

There is only one thing left to do now. A Fire is strong on its own, but when it merges with another, and becomes one, it is even stronger. Anthony lights his lighter and watches in fascination as the flame touches the fingers of his left hand. The skin is melting, but Anthony doesn't feel it. He has been Fire for so long that this doesn't even feel any different.

The curtains burn hard and fast, and Anthony moves back to the bed, and wraps his arms around Ian. He is not afraid of him anymore. When the fire licks at the edges of the bed, and smoke fills the room, Anthony smiles.
