1 Pre-Canon

He was born from his mother's illicit affair and as a second child has a sister five years his senior. Her name is Sae, and she is the only family member who seems to like him. He receives little love from his foster father, more of the variety of physical and mental abuse, and his name, Yue, which sounds girly. His mother seems too weak to stand up for her younger child, or perhaps doesn't care.

'But I swore I'd never cry over them. If I did, I'd lose.'

He grows up wild and reckless, prone to violence and vandalism, addicted to his only escape through drugs and alcohol. He thinks there is no one who really loves him, no one to miss him, and so he thinks there is no point in living either. He spends most of his days at Kira's place and refused to even see his father in the hospital when the man is dying or to attend the funeral later. He lays on his face on Kira's floor, completely drugged out of his mind on both occasions.

2. First death & Rociel

As mentioned, Katou is a drug addict. He'd gladly spend all his time high on chemicals, uncaring of everything. His usual pusher is Kira who keeps him safe and clean. But Katou is by nature moody and reckless, and doesn't like to cling to Kira as a third wheel when Setsuna (the main character) claims too much of Kira's attention. During one of these times he ends up buying drugs from an unfamiliar pusher, who turns out to be Rociel (the main antagonist). He eats a capsule of Rociel himself, becoming one with him and from there on is following Rociel's orders.

Because he has such a high tolerance for drugs, his whole personality doesn't burn away under Rociel's weight but stays lingering in his body. While Rociel picks a fight with Setsuna about his sister (whom Setsuna is in love with), he witnesses everything but can't change his 'own actions'. In order to awaken Alexiel, his twin sister, within Setsuna who is the reincarnation of her, Rociel employs Katou to push Setsuna to his limits as the best he can, taunting him, spreading flyers of him and his sister, even fighting Kira in the end.

When getting a brief moment of control over his body, Katou asks Kira to help him only to have Rociel robbing control over his body again and attacking Kira. Katou has no other choice but to watch as Rociel cuts Kira open and leaves him bleeding on the ground. Setsuna happens upon this sight and attacks Rociel, Alexiel breaks free within him and cuts Katou instead as Rociel escapes from the dying body. His last words are 'I don't wanna die' as Alexiel guides him towards the light and Hades.

3. Hades

Hades is the land of death, where the dead spirits of Assiah are gathered to be trained to either rise in rank or to purge themselves of undesired thoughts and then be guided to either Hellgate or to Edengate. It's ruled by a congregation of spirits, together they're called Enra-ô. Katou arrives there after his death and learns that his wild spirit won't let him rise to a higher plane however much he'd train and is thus bound to be sent to Hell. However, he strikes a bargain with Enra-ô. He'll be let into to the Edengate if he kills Setsuna, the Savior and reincarnation of the Organic angel Alexiel. Setsuna comes to Hades to look for his sister. Enra-ô assigns Katou as his guide and sends them on their way towards the Yggdrasil tree by the lake Hvergelmir, where the guardian of the Hellgate lives, saying Sara (Setsuna's sister) was sent there too.

They travel together - Katou rescues Setsuna, tries to kill him, and Setsuna in return rescues Katou from the ghouls that roam around Hades. They become fast friends, and even if halfway through the trip Setsuna discovers Katou's intentions, it doesn't break their newfound friendship. Katou can't understand the way Setsuna feels for Sara, and they argue a lot about stupidity, love and loyalty. Before they get to the lake, it's quite unlikely that he'd be trying to kill Setsuna anymore.

The guardian of the Hellgate is one of the elemental angels, Uriel (Earth). He's controlled by a mask he created himself centuries ago, and holds a personal grudge against Alexiel. He commands his servant, a doll he created as well, to set a mask on Katou to control him. Doll tells him to attack Setsuna and pulls out an evil spirit out of him to absorb all Setsuna's spiritual power. Setsuna fights back and tells Katou to not give up either, the mask breaks and Katou stabs himself in order to save Setsuna.

Just as Katou is dying, Setsuna unconsciously restores Katou's spirit into his weapon. Later in Uriel's mansion, within the Yggdrasil, Setsuna wakes Katou up, giving him positive life energy by feeding him a feather of Setsuna's own wing. He goes to a place called the Blue Room, there is a 'tree of chance meeting' which takes Setsuna to Katou's dream, where Setsuna has to confront Katou's past with him in order to pull him out. (I don't get it either, It just happens. ^^; Kaori Yuki was on much happy drugs while writing this manga I'm sure. )

Afterwards they force Enra-ô to open a path for them out of Hades with Katou threatening to destroy the Crucible (a place where they capture all the souls). But something goes wrong, someone hurts Setsuna's body (in Anagura where his body is at this moment). Katou breaks the Crucible and accidentally is captured inside himself. Setsuna has to leave by himself as Katou 'dies' yet again. In truth, Uriel restores his soul and creates a doll for him too. He's now Setsuna's 'family' and thus has strong spiritual powers.

4. Assiah

The next time Katou appears, he's in Assiah, which is the living world. The time stands still here due to Adam Kadamon's spell. He's wearing Setsuna's face, his new body that is made of Yggdrasil allows him to change his appearance into resembling anyone as long as he can keep thinking he is that person. He's kicking shit up to attract attention, and when the Heaven's troops notice him, he throws a challenge out to Michael, one of the elemental angels. They want to trick Raphael (yet another elemental angel) into resurrecting Setsuna's body and it's widely known that Raphael looks after Michael closely.

In the meanwhile he makes a trip to Anagura to fetch Setsuna's dead body. (Setsuna at that moment is residing in Alexiel's body and fighting the satans in Hell.) Michael, being hot-tempered idiot, is ready to take on that challenge the moment Katou returns to Assiah and shows himself to the heavenly troops. Michael, along with Raphael and Sara (Setsuna's sister), charge into Assiah and are tricked into close contact with Katou before Uriel shows himself and traps them into his barrier. Raphael resurrects Setsuna's body with the help of Jibril/Sara and the three angels flee back to heaven when they are interrupted by an evil side personality of Metatron poking his finger through Uriel's barrier.

Setsuna, Katou and Uriel return to Anagura where Setsuna receives an invitation to a meeting from Zaphikiel (an influential angel in heaven). He accepts and the meeting ends up with Setsuna going to heaven to save Sara, Katou is left to Anagura with the rest of the group.

5. Heaven & Kira's death (again)

Setsuna comes back from his field trip to heaven, depressed and completely beaten down. He failed in his attempt to save Sara and managed to expose the rebel organization, Zaphikiel as the leader getting captured and is now threatened with a wing drop (cutting an angel's wings and condemning them to a very painful and disrespectful death). Katou and Kira quite literally kick some sense into him, not much unlike Setsuna did to Katou before, and this time they head back to heaven together. Their goal is to rescue Zaphikiel by the help of the Anima Mundi (the rebel organization).

They strike a deal with Riuet, the angel of inventions, a tiny guy with all the requirements for a mad scientist. He lets them use his battle merkabah, a flying battle ship type of thing, if they let him have Katou's body later on. (For scientific experiments, of course.) Zaphikiel has been taken to an inescapable prison island, the Midair passage. Setsuna and Kira find a way in through prison transportation and Katou waits outside with Riuet to pick them up later. Something goes wrong within the prison and Katou has to convince Riuet to break in with his merkabah. They arrive just in time to pick them up before the floating island crashes down to a lake of acid underneath.

The three of them return to Anagura where they seem to keep their base most of times, only to find Rociel there, stealing Alexiel's body. Setsuna runs off to fight him and before Katou can follow, Kira punches him hard enough to drop him. Kira leaves his sword behind and goes after Setsuna. Katou gets up to his feet just in time to see Rociel punch his fist through Kira's chest and shatter him into pieces, which results in greater chaos than any of them (, maybe with the exception of Rociel,) expected. Kira is the vessel that holds the demon lord Lucifer's soul, and with his death, the Hell, which is built on Lucifer's body, crumbles down. And as all the layers of Heaven and Hell are connected, the whole universe is in danger of destruction. Satans (the highest level of demons) gather up to propel up an unnatural fusing of Heaven and Hell by a ritual that connects the lower levels of Heaven and upper levels of Hell together. In the chaos that follows, Katou is thrown out of Anagura, to Heaven.

6. Sevotharte's mansion & Lucifer

Katou wakes up in heaven, he doesn’t remember who he is or where he is. He takes the face of a person he sees the first. He happens to be a dying commander of the Heavenly army. And with his new face and identity he works as a commander in the army through some days, hunting for any clue of who he really is.

A trial is held during those few days. An elemental Angel Jibril, aka Sara, Setsuna's sister, is accused of loving her brother and thus sinning against God. The trial turns out into pure chaos as the elemental angels seek to reveal Sevotharte's schemes, the savior to rescue his sister and Rociel to gain upper hand over Sevotharte by making it possible for the earlier mentioned to reach their goals. Fights break out, property is destroyed, Raphael escapes with Jibriel and Setsuna with the rest of the gang. On their way out, they are stopped by the heavenly army for a checkup. And it comes to no surprise to anyone that Katou is the one leading the troops. Setsuna is recognized as the savior and they're about to get arrested when Katou remembers everything and ends up killing the troops that had been working for him.

After a tearful reunion, they set their course towards Sevotharte's palace. Katou and Uriel create a diversion with Katou acting as decoy, playing the part of the savior again. They fight against the heavenly army, which is in state of disorder because they receive no commands from the White mansion. Rociel's own troops join the fight and at that point Katou charges after Setsuna to the mansion. Rociel and his mysterious companion have slaughtered the whole White mansion, everyone but Sevotharte and they're blaming the Anima mundi for it. Katou somehow makes it into the mansion and takes Setsuna's place and when the first fight breaks out, he's the one taking in the damage from Rociel's mysterious companion, who punches his claws through Katou.

It turns out that Rociel has managed to somehow call Lucifer's soul into his own creation of the archangel, and is now controlling the once brightest angel of all heaven and later the only one powerful enough to stand against God. Both Setsuna and Katou are paralyzed by the sight of their friend (Kira) and Anima mundi have the ungrateful task of dragging them out of the mansion.

7. Final death & The Egg of Wormwood

The wound Lucifer gave him won’t heal. His whole arm is rotting away because of it. Setsuna pulls rope about his sister with Raphael and while Katou is needed for nothing (actually he's practically incapable of walking), he strikes yet another deal with Riuet. The angel of inventions fixes him with a new machine arm with fancy claws. And after Sara is rescued from Metatron (or his evil side personality Sandalphone), Katou, Setsuna and group meet up with Lucifer once again.

Setsuna and most of the group freeze as they see Lucifer, Katou attacks straight on, declaring that Lucifer is not Kira anymore, even if he knows Lucifer has Kira's memories. He rams his new machine arm through Lucifer's chest but is painfully surprised when the fallen angel doesn't keel over from that after all. He's saved from Lucifer's attack by Setsuna finally waking up and running in for rescue. Lucifer retreats but tells them where Rociel is heading the next. To the upper levels of Heaven, the hidden tower of Etenamenki.

Katou is a wreck before they leave. The machine arm is rejected by his plant body, the wound Lucifer gave him refuses to heal and instead the rot is spreading. The only way he's capable of concentrating on his real form is by cutting himself, the pain jumping him enough to remind him of the reality. Uriel tries to talk him out of the trip to the tower of Etenamenki but Katou takes Kira's katana at the man's throat and tells him to stay out of it. He doesn't care what happens to him as long as he gets to settle things with Kira.

Uriel seems to understand and even gives Katou a weapon of terrible power, an Egg of Wormwood. A small device, which calls a meteorite from the sky to destroy one third of all living, a final weapon God meant to be used against the Hell.

The final gate that leads to Atziluth, the higher levels of Heaven, is guarded by twelve powerful angels and can be opened only by a ritual performed by those twelve. When Katou and group arrive to the gate Lucifer happens to be there, the twelve guardian angels ripped into parts and used for the ritual. One of the Satans appears to defend their lord. Drama ensues, Katou doesn't care about anything else but Kira at this point, he also says he doesn't remember practically anything anymore, and it's left unclear if he's lying or not. (I personally like to think he is lying.) The Satan launches an attack, which seduces all men present to think the woman of their dreams is calling them somewhere within a thick mist. She's rendering the whole group quite useless until Katou throws Shiranui (Kira's katana) into her chest. He says his body is dead already, and while her spell works for anything alive, it has no effect on his dead body. He continues on to activate the Egg of Wormwood and when Lucifer moves towards the gate to Atziluth that is closing up, he yanks Shiranui from the Satan’s chest and attacks Lucifer with it. But unfortunately Shiranui doesn't work against its owner, and the blow is deflected by Lucifer. The blade cuts into two pieces and the pointy end of it ends up in the Satan’s head as she was charging to Katou's back. She falls to the ground and Lucifer stabs Katou, not killing him right away in order to ask him why he attacked with Shiranui, which doesn’t have any effect on Lucifer. Katou answers he didn't remember; Lucifer accuses him of being bad liar.

The group runs for the closing gate, the meteorite is coming down and they have to get through before the gate closes. Setsuna gets stuck and in the last possible moment Katou appears between the gates to keep them open until Setsuna gets through. He then slips back to the outside saying he never did belong to Heaven. His last moments are spent with a memory of Kira offering him a light to his last cigarette.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

"That's cuz, he who is fast... wins!"

The author referrers to him as the delinquent, which does describe him quite sufficiently. He's irresponsible, carefree, and prone to both violence and vandalism. What moves him enough to change his motives or push him to take an action, is completely random. He's not a stupid guy, just thoughtless and too fast for his own good.

His most prominent characteristics are stubbornness, bad temper and disinterest towards anything he doesn’t regard as important. Most often he can be seen mocking people around him, causing trouble, stealing, drinking, doing drugs...

And yet despite this charming nature of his, he also is stubbornly loyal when he decides to get attached to someone. There's very few that rate that status in his eyes: Kira for being there for years and years, always offering advice, companionship and drugs, Setsuna who both killed and revived him and perhaps even Uriel, who gave him a new life. He doesn't do trust or attachment before it's forced upon him, and he fights back every step on the way.

At his best he's loyal, giving and trustworthy, sticking by the people he loves through thick and thin, fighting for them, and dying for them. At his worst he's violent, cruel and wild, not caring whose life he ruins as long as he gets what he wants.

N A R R A T O R

The world was standing so still, no wind rustling through his hair, no cars squished to the narrow streets, not even the ant like people traveling in steady streams from one place to another. A void, so full of clutter, everywhere, still.

Katou groaned, he rolled onto his back on the ledge of the rooftop and directed his gaze at the huge crow sitting peacefully beside him.

"This is fucking boring," he stated and narrowed his gaze into the black depths of the bird's eyes. They stared at each other in silence, the world humming its emptiness around them, until Katou snorted loudly and let his head loll over the edge to view the world upside down.

"And so weird. I dunno about you, pal. But I like the noise, and people. Who's gonna sell me my beer when there's frikin' no-one around?"

"You're underage."

"And you're a bird! Geez, get off my case old man."

Katou sighed again, glancing at Setsuna's body that lied on the stone tiles few meters away. Why was he doing this for the idiot again? Everyone kept singing 'messiah' this 'savior' that around Setsuna, reincarnation of Alexiel, wonderboy, miracle in flesh. Pure stupidity, if someone would ask Katou, which they didn't. Such a shame. He'd seen idiots in his brief lifetime, but never such a complete moron as Setsuna could be.

And yet here he was. Pretending to be that same idiot, wearing his face and inviting himself to take hit for Setsuna.

The irony was hardly lost on him, or the dark humor of it. Laughing throatily, he patted his pockets and pulled out a crumbled pack of cigarettes. He shook out one wrinkled roll of cancer and then glanced at the crow.

"Want one?" he asked with arching brows and offered the pack, his laughter short and taunting as the bird jumped away from him. "I'ma take that as a no."

He lit up the cigarette, inhaling the smoke deeply and then let it sneak out from his nose, spiraling slowly towards the sky in the immobile air. He locked his hands behind his neck and just stared at the blue sky, so perfect and unmarred now. It wouldn't be hard to believe in God under that kind of sky.

Snorting, he sucked in the smoke again. Heaven was a joke - angels were not pure and good; God was sleeping.

"Hey, hey, birdman," he called out without lifting his head. "You think they're gonna make us wait for much longer?"

No one called Uriel, the gatekeeper of Hell, a birdman. No one but Katou. Doll had made him promise not to use Uri-boy, it apparently was too disrespectful. Respect? For a guy who would nip on Katou's ear when the angel wanted his attention. No fucking way.

He tossed the cigarette over the ledge with a sigh and climbed up to his legs. Stretching his hands above his head he let his gaze travel yet again over the empty scenery.

"I say we call down those buddies of yours already," he said with a sharp grin, pushing his hands into his pockets. "Come on, I know you want to. Tearful reunion and all that shit."
