he's miracle-worked. he went back to the vet one more time and when he came home he was eating (with powdered "appetite stimulant" mixed in) and drinking and has been on clavamox since. he's becoming himself, even if his hips still feel too sharp. he has a rattly mouse toy and when i saw him throw it up in the air for himself to bat/chase again i almost cried.
i can't believe i forgot to mention this after all the help you offered and i begged. especially after using a dropper to administer bubblegum-scented medicine to a cat back at his full strength, have acquired on day one a more complete appreciation for what people in cat hospitals do every day.
also, i am shamelessly in love with his shaved-for-ultrasound belly.
FUN FACT (isn't it very 'preston' to say that?): As a Siamese, the hair on his belly might grow back darker than you expect. It's because that spot's initially a little chillier than usual, and his pigmentation responds to temperature. But it'll go back to normal once it grows out.
he also says PRO TIP. it's not going dark so far, but i am fascinated by the tiny bald navel spot, and the color-changing patch where the hair on his arm is growing back.
