Title: Thank The Little Prince
Pairing: Phoenix / Edgeworth
Rating: PG
Warnings: There's some French, but nothing else.
Summary: Phoenix gets introduced to French literature.
Author's Notes: Spawned from my love of Le Petit Prince, I thought I should make a tribute-esque to it. Lord knows that Miles probably read hundreds of foreign kid's books when he was little.
Word Count: 639

“What’re you doing?”

“Reading - something that would be new to you, Wright?”

“Oh, ha ha. That was so funny, Miles.” Phoenix rolled over, sending the prosecutor a faux-amused look. A few moments passed, one of which was filled with Miles smirking, and then the defense attorney sat up from the pink couch. He gave a curious look at the slim book, moving behind Miles, who had been sitting comfortably at his desk. “Is that a children’s book?”

Miles continued to read, flicking over the words with ease. “Yes, what of it?”

“Don’t you think that’s a bit..odd?” Phoenix asked, wrapping his arms around the prosecutor’s upper torso, leaning to situate his head on his shoulder. It was after looking at the words several times, did it dawn on Phoenix that this particular book wasn’t in the English language - and, after cursing himself quietly, he was reminded that he was rather rusty on foreign languages. “What book is it?”

“The Little Prince,” Miles responded after a moment, a fond tone in his voice. He flipped the page, reading the passages, and grateful that during his travels - and upbringing - language had been a large part of his schooling. It really had to be, living in Europe. “I presume you haven’t read it?”

“Excuse me for not having time to go out and learn whatever language-“

“It’s French.”

“What?” Phoenix drew back slightly, turning his head to show Miles the odd look on his face.

The prosecutor, in turn, scowled, staring rightfully at group of lines. “It’s in French, Wright.” There was an offended tone in his voice, one that Phoenix recognized immediately.

“Sorry,” He muttered, returning to his comfortable position and attempting to read over Miles’ shoulder. More minutes passed, and he eventually noticed that Miles hadn’t turned the page - when he had been flying through the book none too long ago. “Why did you stop?”

“I,” Miles paused, his face reddening a small amount. “I enjoy this page.”

“Really? What does it say?”

There was another hesitation, and then Miles’ smirk returned.

“-Adieu, dit-il.

-Adieu, dit le renard. Voici mon secret. Il est très simple: on ne voit bien qu’avec le coeur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux.”

There was a long silence, after which Miles turned to see a focused look on Phoenix’s face; and then caused a deeper reddening on the prosecutor’s face. Too much emotion on that man’s face; he wore his emotions on his sleeve far too much - an ability that Miles was deeply jealous of.

“In English, Miles.”

The prosecutor scoffed, turning back to the book.

“’Goodbye,’ he said.

‘Goodbye,’ said the fox. ‘And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

There was another drawn-out pause, and Miles fidgeted, suddenly feeling incredibly foolish. It was a children’s book - one that he had held dear to his heart for quite some time. He was about to open his mouth and make up some reason for them to leave the office so the prosecutor could stash it somewhere in his desk.

But there was a tugging at his chin, and, his grip loosened on the slender book - mouth being pulled into a gentle kiss. Leaving Miles even further red in the face, if it were possible, Phoenix slowly pulled the prosecutor to his feet, guiding him with his feet and hands and lips toward the couch, before plopping him down and settling himself next to him with a cheeky grin. “Read more, would you?” Phoenix crooned, flipping the book to the very beginning, and staring at the pictures that lay there. “I’m starting to think that kid’s books are more interesting than the stuff that’s made for adults.”
