rock in rio

just want to send this memory to myself, of all the awesome music we saw on our trip. most of it completely unplanned and added so much.

1) it must have been our first night in rio, when we stumbled across the night fair at the park between copacobana and ipanema. there was a stage set up, and we waited like an hour for the band to come out. it was pretty generic rock music mixed with brazilian music, with way too much stage fog. still, it was the perfect way to blow out our first night after walking around all day. learning about the ticket system to buy drinks and food was fun, too, once we finally got our caipirinha. the burger on the way out was the meaty cherry on top.

2) tip from the nyc photographer we met at christ the redeemer to go, that night, to funicao progresso to catch an episode of boiler room! so cool! it took us way out to the center of rio on a rainy night. we had to walk through giant puddles to get inside. nothing going on, it's the building next door! walk back through the puddles and find the spot. it looks cool. free entry for registering online. what next? unlimited free beer because budweiser is the sponsor?! the music was really good. 2 bands and 2 djs. eating some ecstasy made it even funner. hope to run into that guy that looks like me from jazzanova. the sex with nancy that night was amazing. relearned a new way to use the couch, and i bet the marks from her head against the mirror are still there...

3) well, not so fun, and not such a surprise, seeing samba bands play at rio scenarium was worth it for a typical experience. getting drunk and wandering around the place with nancy was fun. not drunk enough to dance, though! so another life challenge - get nancy to dance to samba music.

4) after a big lunch by the selaron steps, we go back to the aqueduct to probably find our way home. what's that we hear in the background? lamb of god soundchecking!? we rush over to the gate to peer into the open air stage. yep, it's definitely live music, it's definitely lamb of god. another guy tells us they are playing that night. he came from sao paulo to see them. we're like, "well we came from new york motherfucker, because we're getting tickets!" not before watching that bum bust out some of the best hardcore moves i've seen in a while. we go back home to get money because box office is cash only. a couple of hours later we're back to get our tickets and stand in line, drinking yet another caipirinha we got from a cart stationed right next to the line. perfect. oh yea, carcass to open. mind blown. i will never forget nancy rolling up the poster that came with her t-shirt and hiding it so well in the bush. we forgot it on the way out.

5) alt-j playing in dublin was not a surprise. what was a surprise is that we actually went. it wasn't easy finding tickets from rio to dublin, but when i did, it was game on. so worth it. standing in a sea of crazy irish people, listening to alt-j do most of their first album. pretty epic. it even got dark eventually around 9:30p so that crazy light show they had looked proper. they closed with left hand free and breezeblocks. such a high leaving after that. and we crashed immediately after going to that cart that sold cheeseburgers and curry fries. lol. i'll call it the best post concert meal ever.

6) bonus round - that bar where we sat outside and eventually got drunk enough that we went past the crowd and danced right in front of the band. then we even went back for another round and danced on the catwalk. nancy didn't think people would see us up there, until i reminded her about that girl that was dancing up there earlier. whoops :) we made it to this bar after walking around getting drinks wherever we could find them. i think it started with that restaurant by the theater, where we watched cars hit the dead end by the plaza, and have to try and turn around. after that is a blur. i just remember us making out at every corner we had to wait for the walk signal. then the weird baked potato we got at the german place.

7) bonus round #2 - that guy from sweden playing folk music at that factory art space in botafogo. yea, i feel bad. we left before he even started. just had some drinks and went across the street to that swanky burger place.
