Once, with another woman…

“Well, don’t let me keep you, if you two have somewhere to be.”

Cheri glanced at the man holding her hand. Suddenly she felt foolish and ashamed.

“You know, I think I’ll hang around here a little longer after all,” she decided.

“Great, we can catch up a little then,” Don said with a grin.

The other man was about to protest, but decided it wasn’t worth it. He let go of Cheri’s hand, shrugged, and walked away.

“I haven’t seen you since Brad broke up with me,” Cheri said once he was gone.

Don nodded. “Yeah, you know how it is-the best friend and ex-girlfriend. Makes it hard to hang out afterwards.

“I know.”

“Look, don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m glad he broke up with you.”

“What’s the right way to take that?”

“I mean, Brad’s , like, your stereotypical college guy, right?” But you’re obviously not the stereotypical college girl.”

Cheri still wasn’t sure how she was supposed to feel good about what he was saying. He could see her confusion.

“You know why Brad broke up with you, right?” he asked, hoping she did. Brad wasn’t smooth enough to hide his true intentions.

“Yeah,” Cheri answered, not wanting to go into any detail.

He could tell by the uncomfortable look on her face that she knew exactly why-Brad got tired of waiting for what he wanted.

“I always knew you were not the kind of girl Brad really wanted. He shouldn’t have been pushing that stuff on you.”

Cheri shrugged. “Is it really that big of a deal?”

Depends on who you ask, he thought. Out loud, he said, “You must have thought it was, or Brad would’ve had nicer things to say about you after he broke up with you.”

“I guess I just needed to make sure I was ready first. I mean,” she gestured to the party going on around them, “it can’t be that big a deal-everyone does it eventually, right?”

“No,” he stated plainly, crossing his arms. “Not everyone.”

Cheri stared at him skeptically for a few seconds before sighing.

“Can we just change the subject?” she pleaded.

“Sure,” Don smiled understandingly. “So what’s new with you since we last talked?”
