(Epic) Failure

"She said 'Don't let my door hit your ass.'"
-blink-182, Don't Leave Me

It was just another regular day. Go to work, come home, fire up a podcast from the collection. I decided to make an honest man of myself and buy Heroes 5 rather than, ahem, "borrowing" harkon's version. It's been fun to play through, mostly.

Just at the end of the Warlock campaign, the game freezes during a cutscene. I've seen slowdowns before, but this just froze with lots of disk reading. Thirty seconds later it started again, then it froze. Then it started, and etc, until Heroes crashed.

That's fine, whatever, restart, get a drink. Only to come back and find that the computer is still showing the Windows XP splash screen. Er, right.

As it turns out wanderman will boot okay in safe mode and also normally if I give it enough time, but fails to complete a chkdsk. And I/O performance has randomly gone to hell - I'm backing up stuff now, but some of these PDFs on my desktop are taking ages to copy over.

If anyone can accurately diagnose the problem as something other than my HDD on the way out, please let me know as I'm going to buy a new one today. Must... not... buy... Raptor...

Thought for the day:
At least it's only a hard drive. If I had to rename my computer again, at this rate I'll be out of characters before David Weber releases another book already.
